It's not every day that an affordable electric car beats the luxury giants! At a recent test event held at Germany's Nürburgring, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N was compared with some of the most expensive electric vehicles (EVs) on the market, including a £2 million hypercar.
The event was CAR Magazine's first detailed assessment of high-performance EVs since 2022. The IONIQ 5 N, priced much lower than its high-end rivals, outperformed them all, earning high marks for its performance that reminds many of the classic hot hatchbacks of the past.
The IONIQ 5 N, described by CAR Magazine as exhilarating to drive, offers a driving experience that captures the excitement of traditional high-performance hatchbacks but in an electric form. It was praised for its responsive handling and engaging drive, characteristics that stand out in a competitive field. The vehicle uses good and refined technology that makes driving enjoyable, leading to its recognition as a top performer in its class.
Built on Hyundai's Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which was initially used for the IONIQ 5, the IONIQ 5 N incorporates the technical background of Hyundai's N division. The N model makes the driving experience a lot better by providing more power and better performance in areas like battery cooling and braking. The car's electric motors can reach up to 21,000 RPM, allowing it to produce up to 650 PS with its N Grin Boost feature, and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 3.4 seconds.
Hyundai has also upgraded the IONIQ 5 N with new technologies for an improved driving experience, which includes features like the N Pedal for sharper turn-in and improved throttle sensitivity, improving the thrill of cornering. The car also introduces the N e-shift, which simulates the feel of an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission found in combustion engine models, adding to the driver's sort of connection through an exhilarating auditory experience provided by the N Active Sound+ technology.
The IONIQ 5 N is really accumulating awards. This year alone, it has been named the World Performance Car at the World Car Awards and the Best EV Hot Hatch at the TopGear.com Electric Awards.
