The Toyota Zenix Hybrid is a game-changer not just in the world of multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) but also in the Innova nameplate as a whole. With its striking exterior design, luxurious interior, advanced technology, and impressive performance, it presents a compelling package that is hard to ignore and is Toyota’s offering and glimpse of how the MPVs of the future can be moving forward.
Exterior
Let's start with the exterior. The Zenix showcases a departure from the design of the current-generation Innova. It embraces a more elegant and contemporary look with its prominent Trapezium grille, sleek headlights, and stylish 18-inch wheels.
While still retaining the essence of the Innova nameplate, the design language of other modern Toyota models like the Toyota Veloz and RAV4 is evident, particularly in the rear-end design and taillights. The sculpted fenders contribute to a wider stance, and the added lines throughout the body bring a sense of imagination and modernity to this trusted nameplate.
Let’s just say on the outside, you wouldn’t mind showing up in front of a five-star hotel driveway, as the overall design is very cohesive and classy for those special occasions.
Interior
Moving inside, the Zenix offers a significant improvement over its predecessor. The interior welcomes you with a two-tone dark chestnut brown and black color scheme that exudes sophistication. The driver enjoys power seats, while the middle row features Ottoman-style captain seats with power adjustability for reclining and leg rest. The third-row bench allows for a maximum seating capacity of seven people. The inclusion of ambient lighting adds to the overall ambiance, creating a truly pleasant environment to be in, whether in the hustle and bustle of Metro Manila or going out of town.
Toyota has paid attention to every detail, drawing inspiration from higher-end models like the Alphard and Hiace Super Grandia, resulting in a taste of luxury at a more affordable price point. The redesigned leather-wrapped steering wheel not only enhances the overall sportiness of the interior but also retains the class and elegance that the overall vehicle exudes. The touchpoints throughout the cabin feature higher-quality plastics, contributing to a more upscale feel. Additionally, the ergonomic layout ensures comfort for both the driver and passengers. Overall, the Zenix offers a well-thought-out and inviting interior.
If there is one complaint, you can clearly see the outline of the panoramic sunroof in the ceiling, which hints that there is still a higher-end variant available. It sticks out, especially when seated in the middle row captain's chairs. Whether Toyota Motor Philippines will bring in a higher-end variant down the line is still up in the air, but as of now, the Hybrid Q variant is the top-of-the-range model available locally.
Technology and connectivity
In terms of technology and connectivity, the Zenix leaves no stone unturned. Premium amenities include an auto-dimming rearview mirror, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, and a combination digital-analog gauge cluster. The centerpiece of the tech-savvy cabin is the 10.1-inch infotainment screen, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This feature allows seamless smartphone integration, providing access to navigation, music, and communication apps. The stereo system needs a bit of improvement, especially in its mids, but it is highly acceptable for the segment.
For the driver's convenience, a configurable seven-inch semi-digital gauge cluster displays essential information about the Zenix's hybrid system, allowing them to monitor its performance. Safety is also a priority, with the inclusion of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite of safety features, including Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
While we didn't have the opportunity to test these advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) extensively, Toyota's reputation in this area gives us confidence that they will perform flawlessly as with other models we have tested.
Performance and handling
Performance and handling are areas where the Zenix stands out. The most significant change compared to the current generation Innova is that it is only available with gasoline engines. The top-of-the-line Q Variant features the MK20A-FXS 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which generates 150 horsepower, complemented by the added power from the electric motor. This is mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which is also a departure from the conventional automatic transmission used in the current-generation Innova. It's important to note that the power figures of the gasoline engine and electric motor are not combined for peak power but rather works together for efficiency, so it won’t make a combined output of 183 hp and 393 Nm of torque as initially assumed.
During our test drive, the motor provided usable power throughout the rev range, and the pairing of the engine, electric motor, and CVT was nearly flawless in its delivery and is tuned very well to keep you in the correct powerband at all times. This makes the Zenix feel more powerful than its predecessor, especially with its better throttle response. While we were unable to obtain specific fuel efficiency figures, we can reasonably expect better fuel economy compared to the diesel engines available in the current-generation Innova.
Another significant change is the utilization of the Toyota New Global Architecture - Compact (TNGA-C) platform, resulting in a more comfortable ride and improved chassis rigidity. This departure from the previous ladder frame chassis of the Innova brings notable improvements in comfort and handling. Although our initial drive was brief, it was enough to feel the enhanced comfort and stability of the Zenix. We look forward to spending more time with the vehicle to provide a comprehensive assessment of its performance and comfort.
Verdict
All in all, the Toyota Zenix Hybrid presents an exceptional value proposition at a price tag of P 1,953,000. With its luxurious interior, advanced technology, and improved performance, it offers a unique blend of comfort, practicality, and sophistication. While some may be skeptical about hybrid technology in a proven workhorse like the Innova, the Zenix proves that the future is within reach. If you are in the market for a versatile and well-equipped MPV, the Innova Zenix Hybrid should undoubtedly be at the top of your list. Toyota has once again delivered a reliable and impressive vehicle that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression.
