The MG ZS entered the market back in 2018 as the flagship vehicle of the automaker. Since then it has risen in popularity and is now one of the top choices to go for if you want a feature-packed crossover that also comes with an affordable and attractive price point.
Fast forward to 2021 and MG Philippines has decided to launch the new version of the crossover that comes with a new design and with a new more powerful turbocharged engine. The MG ZST takes the lessons learned from the ZS model and takes everything to a whole new level. With that said, here are 5 things we like about the MG ZST.
Sleeker exterior design
As the MG ZST is effectively the facelifted version of the MG, the automaker has decided to do something a little bit special with its makeover. Gone are the boxier lines of the older generation of the crossover and in is the new curvier looks of the ZST.
You get sleeker LED headlights, a new grille, softer lines for the new bumpers, and a set of new alloy wheels as well. Altogether this gives the MG ZST a more premium look compared to its ZS counterpart all while retaining a subtle yet sporty look.
Refreshed interior
The MG ZST takes the interior of the ZS and improves upon it to give it a more up-market and premium look and feel. While the layout remains familiar MG has given the ZST an all-digital gauge cluster, a new set of climate controls, along with a new infotainment system to match the overall new look.
For this model, the automaker has even added red accents all across the cabin of the vehicle which can be found on the center console, door cards, air vents, and even on the seats. That being said, subtle and sporty seems to be the new theme for the ZST.
A familiar set of features
What made the MG ZS a popular choice for those looking to get a crossover was its particular set of features. At the time of its launch, these were new to the industry and thus wowed the car buying audience as these features would typically be reserved for higher-end models. The same can also be said for the MG ZST as it carries over much of the same features found in the ZS. This means that the ZST has a 360-degree camera, a panoramic sunroof, and a much larger infotainment system compared to its counterpart.
A new more powerful engine
While the 1.5-liter found in the ZS was enough to power it and bring it to highway speeds comfortably it was soon overshadowed by new competitors in the crossover segment. In the case of the MG ZST, the automaker listened and has given the crossover a more powerful 1.3-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder motor.
While it’s down in terms of displacement and a cylinder, the power it produces is leaps and bounds better as it now pushes out 161 hp and 230 Nm of torque. This allows the crossover to hit highway speeds faster while still retaining good fuel efficiency figures.
A new transmission
The four-speed automatic transmission found in the ZS suited it well and did its job to give the vehicle great fuel efficiency figures especially in the city. For the case of the ZST, it has ditched the four-speed in favor of a new six-speed automatic transmission. This allows the crossover to rein in all of its newfound power and promptly put it onto the road. Shifting is still smooth and as quick as ever and the crossover still maintains a comfortable ride.
With that said, the MG ZST is worthy of a spot on your shortlist as it checks many of the right boxes for those looking to get an affordable and capable crossover. Moreover, the improvements from the ZS model are substantial and are definitely worth the higher price tag that this version of the crossover demands.
