The MG 6, while it may be one of the first models that MG Philippines launched when the brand was revived, but during its launch, it was one of the more underrated nameplates in the lineup, overshadowed by the hype of the MG ZS. While almost everyone was paying attention to the MG ZS, the MG 6 sat in the corner waiting for a few particular buyers.
For those of you who are considering the MG 6, or who are on the hunt for a classy and stylish compact car, here are six reasons why the MG 6 should find its way into your garage.
Just look at it
We will admit, there were quite a number of us in the AutoDeal team that found MG’s ZS to be a little too close in style to the Mazda CX-5. While the ZS was grabbing headlines with its affordable price tag and bang-for-buck looks, a lot of people ended up ignoring the 6, which was the real underrated choice in the MG lineup if you ask us.
Slung low, and with MG’s signature styling that has grown on us in the past few years, the 6 looks more expensive than it is. More on that later. The svelte lines and the modern aesthetic only help cement its “pogi” factor whether you’re in it or out of it.
Top trimmings
Now, this next reason might not appeal to most people, and neither does it appeal to most of us in AutoDeal, but the red leather that MG used on the seats and on the dashboard is really attention-grabbing and definitely a highlight of the car. You may commonly find special colored interiors at the upper end of the market. Some manufacturers are too scared to offer an interior fully colored in red, but the MG 6 doesn’t stick to conventional black and white. Red’s a good match for the MG 6 because of its purported sporty nature. The model even has aluminum pedals to further add a sporty touch. That being said, the ergonomics make the car feel low to the ground and ready to drive.
We don’t blame you if you feel the need for speed while sitting in the driver’s seat. During our time with it, one of the first roads that we wanted to visit was a twisting and winding one.
Turbocharged and ready to go
Speaking of having the need for speed, the MG 6 is actually pretty capable when it comes to acceleration. The 1.5-liter turbocharged motor delivers up to 164 hp and 250 Nm of torque, which is an exciting value proposition in the segment and the price that the MG 6 commands. While turbocharged gasoline engines have been becoming more commonplace in many consumer vehicles as of late, the MG 6 was lauded as being one of the first compact sedans to offer its standard throughout the lineup.
Even today, the horsepower and the torque figures stack up against several competitors, be it a crossover or a sedan. Of course, the MG 6 isn’t the most powerful at the moment, but it’s one of the more powerful powertrains out on the market today.
Sporty chassis
One of the better traits of the MG 6, back when we reviewed it, was the handling. While it wasn’t bleeding-edge for the segment it was respectable enough for us to enjoy our time with the model. Low-speed driving felt effortless, and the car exhibited good sightlines so we could navigate tight city streets and parking lots with ease.
The chassis felt planted and surefooted through corners. The suspension leans more towards the sporty side of things, while the engine helps give you a sense that you are in a much faster car with waves of excitement coming in whenever you step on it. We’ll say that it’s not the best car to take on a very imperfect road, but on smooth patches of asphalt, it handles well and it can get your heart pounding.
It’s a liftback
One thing that really sets the MG 6 apart from the rest of its competition is the liftback rear boot lid. Not only is this design a lot more practical, but it’s also the model’s party piece. If ever you stuff something at the back of the MG 6, be prepared to look so good. We wish that more cars came with liftbacks because it’s just way more convenient to load and unload stuff from the back.
It’s more affordable than you think
Perhaps the best-selling feature of the MG 6 would be its price tag. With the top-of-the-line model costing just P1,188,888, you might be hard-pressed to find a better value from another brand. For the same price, you might not even get a turbocharged motor with the same or around the same output as the MG 6.
Heck, the amount of tech, features, and fun that the MG 6 exhibits can stack up to quite a number of cars in the market today. In our eyes, it’s worthwhile to check out and see if it deserves a spot in your garage given that it’s a relative bargain.
