We think about a lot of things in our daily lives. There's a myriad of responsibilities to cater to, and sometimes they can feel overwhelming. While car insurance can seem like yet another thing to think about, it's actually pretty important to stay on top of it.
One way to make your insurance work for you is by renewing its validity ahead of the set expiration date. Early renewal could benefit you because you wouldn't be scrambling for time and settling for any old policy when the date comes.
By doing this, you'd be saving yourself some time and effort. You would also be giving yourself a nice set of options to get the best deal possible, and who doesn't want that?
How early should I renew my insurance?
In most cases, you'd be able to renew your auto insurance before it expires. The real question is, at what point is it the best time to renew? You don't want the date to be so early that it's impractical.
According to some experts, the best time frame for early car insurance renewal is 2 to 4 weeks before the expiration date. This range gives you ample time to negotiate new terms or even explore deals from other insurance providers.
Your insurer could also give you a better offer simply because you're renewing early. Some reports indicate that the average motorist pays significantly less if they get a new insurance policy at least one week before it expires. That means you could pay more if you decide to put off the renewal until the last day of your policy.
What to do when your insurance expires
No one wants their car insurance to expire, but sometimes people forget about stuff, and that's fine. The crucial thing is to do something to remedy it. Remember that without insurance, you're essentially powerless against accidents and other unforeseen incidents.
So, if your insurance policy expires and you haven't renewed it, here's what you should do.
Stop driving your car - Without auto insurance, you're exposing your vehicle to unnecessarily risky situations. If you get into an accident without being insured, it can be a damaging affair, even if it isn't your fault. The best thing to do here would be to keep your car in the garage until you come up with a solution.
Contact your agent - If your insurance policy expires, it's best to get in touch with your agent to discuss potential renewal options. Your agent will be able to give you an overview of the pros and cons of different policies, and you can decide from there. In some cases, you may even be able to buy your insurance online.
Renew your insurance policy - This may seem like the obvious next step, but believe it or not, some drivers go years without renewing their insurance policies. The risk is not worth it, and you're better off putting in the time to get a new deal in place than being unsure of yourself every time you get behind the wheel.
