When we think of family vehicles the first kinds of vehicles we gravitate to are usually crossovers or the big PPV-based SUVs that are a perennial favorite in the country. This is because Filipinos desire a vehicle that can take the abuse the Philippines’ roads can throw at it as well as provide comfort and ample space for luggage.
Crossovers come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, making it challenging to choose the right model even after deciding on this segment. For those seeking a versatile, all-purpose option, BYD might have the solution with the Sealion 6 DM-i.
Here are five key qualities that, in our opinion, make the Sealion 6 an excellent all-around family crossover.
Family-friendly looks? Check
Sporty and aggressive styling may be great on a two-door coupe or a sports car, it can feel out of place on a family crossover. Fortunately, the BYD Sealion 6 strikes a great balance with its design. It features sleek lines and an angular front end for a futuristic touch, complemented by soft curves and subtle creases on the hood and doors for a more refined, balanced look.
The rear end looks equally futuristic but the design is executed in a discrete fashion, noticeable in the tasteful touches like the small tailgate spoiler, the black garnish on the tailgate, and the silver trim on the lower bumper.
Overall, the Sealion 6 doesn’t try too much to stand out but it isn’t slacking in the beauty department either. As a car, the Sealion 6 belongs to a club of vehicles that will fit right in at a red-carpet event as well as a weekend barbecue.
Sizable interior space? Check
As Caco and the team found in our review of the Sealion 6, the interior space in the second row is quite impressive. Even with the front seats pulled back, leg space is plentiful for the rear passengers to relax. In addition, even with a panoramic glass roof, the headroom is decent which is a great relief if a member of your family is vertically gifted.
Aside from the interior space, cubby holes and storage spaces are plentiful in the back so storing items small items, and bottles is a breeze. Further in the back, the Sealion 6 has a trunk with a very usable 552 liters of space which can be further expanded by folding the rear seats down.
Tech and convenience features? Check
If you haven’t taken a gander at the Sealion 6’s Car Guide yet, allow us to give you a quick review of its features. On the outside, its LED headlights come with adjustable height and a follow-me-home function, plus keyless entry, push-button start, and even an NFC card-activated keyless access.
Inside, you’ll find thoughtful touches like dual 15W wireless phone chargers, a 12V socket for your accessories, and a PM2.5 filtration system to keep the cabin air fresh. The automatic dual-zone climate control, paired with rear air vents, ensures everyone stays comfortable no matter the weather.
When it comes to entertainment, the Sealion 6 has also got you covered. You’ll get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity, and a stunning 15.6-inch intelligent rotating touchscreen. Add in the Infinity audio system with 10 speakers, voice assistant, satellite navigation, and the BYD app store, and every drive feels like an upgrade. Plus, there’s no shortage of charging options with USB-C and USB-A ports both front and rear, and OTA updates ensure your tech stays current.
Fuel efficient motoring? Check
One major drawback of choosing larger vehicles is that they tend to consume more fuel, especially if you’re in the metro and have to wait for hours on end in traffic. The Sealion 6, with its DM-i plug-in hybrid powertrain, utilizes an electric motor, an 18.3 kWh battery, and an internal combustion engine as a range extender. This combo is supposed to cut down on fuel consumption as well as improve fuel efficiency.
Paired with an E-CVT, the powertrain delivers a combined 217 horsepower and 325 Nm of torque, enabling a zero to 100 km/h sprint in just 8.3 seconds. The high-capacity, high-voltage battery provides an impressive all-electric range of 105 kilometers. Combined with its 60-liter fuel tank, the Sealion 6 can cover up to approximately 1,100 kilometers, offering exceptional range for both city commutes and long-distance trips. Keep in mind that since the Sealion 6 is essentially a plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV), owners will have the flexibility to charge or refuel this crossover depending on their needs. Plus, since the battery has a 105 km range, you’ll likely be driving on electric power most of the time without having to rely on the engine which means you won’t be hanging around the pumps every week.
Value for money? A big check
The major advantage the Sealion 6 has over its competitors is its price tag. Priced at just 1,548,000 it undercuts most hybrids on the market and even some pure internal combustion-powered crossovers that are smaller and less equipped than it. There really isn’t much to say about the Sealion 6’s price aside from the fact that is definitely staggering to see how much you get for a hybrid crossover that’s under P1.6 million. This makes the Sealion 6 a game-changer in its segment, offering advanced hybrid technology at a price that's accessible to a wider range of buyers.
In a market where hybrids often come with a premium price tag, the Sealion 6 delivers exceptional value, making it an attractive option for families and tech-savvy drivers alike. It proves that you don’t have to compromise on performance, features, or efficiency to stay within budget.
