We’ve seen it in the metal, and it recently took center stage in our Behind the Wheel video—Mazda’s CX-90 continues to leave a lasting impression since its 2023 debut. As the flagship crossover SUV of the Mazda lineup, it naturally comes equipped with all the premium features the brand is known for. But Mazda didn’t stop at loading it with top-notch features; they meticulously refined every detail to ensure the CX-90 isn’t just a standout crossover—it’s a vehicle that delivers an exceptional driving experience.
In this article, we’ll explore five features of the Mazda CX-90 that we absolutely love. Beyond highlighting these features, we’ll dive into how Mazda seamlessly integrates them into the CX-90, creating a balanced and cohesive driving experience.
The Mazda Connect infotainment display
First on our list is the infotainment display—a staple in most modern vehicles—but the one in the CX-90 stands out with Mazda’s signature touch. The infotainment system in the Mazda CX-90 is composed of a 12.3-inch LCD Display with a Bluetooth hands-free function, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. Par for the course right? The CX-90 as well as most Mazda vehicles on the road are not equipped with a touchscreen.
The reasoning behind this is simple; Mazda wants you to focus on the road ahead as well as the task of driving your vehicle. Instead of relying on a touchscreen, Mazda designed an ergonomic rotary dial in the center console to control the infotainment system. This setup is intuitive, allowing the driver to quickly adapt and operate it with ease. Positioned near the center armrest, the rotary dial ensures you can make adjustments without taking your eyes off the road or straining to reach the screen.
This next feature is closely related to the infotainment display and it can make the driving and riding experience of any car into a great one. The feature in question is the Bose 12-speaker sound system incorporated into the CX-90. The result of putting a powerful speaker system like that in the CX-90 is heaven for any audiophile out there who desire crips and clear sounds in a car.
Driver monitoring system
Next up we move on to a safety feature that can only be really found in more expensive vehicles, Mazda’s Driver Monitoring system. Mazda’s Driver Monitoring system is designed to enhance safety by detecting signs of driver fatigue and sleepiness, encouraging drivers to take a break when needed. Operating at speeds of approximately 5 km/h or higher, the system uses a driver monitoring camera to analyze changes in the driver’s facial features. Based on this data, it estimates the level of accumulated fatigue and sleepiness.
When signs of fatigue are detected, the system alerts the driver through a warning displayed in the instrument cluster and an accompanying sound. Depending on the severity of the fatigue, the system provides two levels of alerts: a cautionary warning for early signs of fatigue and a more urgent warning when significant fatigue or sleepiness is detected.
The most powerful engine Mazda made to date
A big crossover needs a big engine to give it some grunt and luckily, the CX-90 is not lacking in engine size or power. Propelling the CX-90 is a 3.3-liter e-SKYACTIV straight-six engine, the largest and most powerful engine Mazda has ever created to date. Paired with Mazda’s eight-speed SKYACTIV Drive automatic transmission and a mild-hybrid system, this powertrain delivers an impressive 280 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. Power is distributed to all four wheels through Mazda’s i-ACTIV all-wheel drive system, which maintains a rear-biased setup, sending most of the power to the rear wheels for enhanced driving dynamics.
The result of all this power is a zero to 100 time of 7.6 seconds all the way to a top speed of 210 km/h. Combined with Mazda’s top-notch suspension and handling characteristics, the CX-90 can definitely excite the senses while remaining capable of being smooth and composed.
The Mazda CX-90’s interior exudes elegance and sophistication, offering a luxurious yet minimalist atmosphere that can even rival its European counterparts. Inside, passengers are greeted by plush Nappa leather upholstery complemented by other premium materials that enhance the cabin’s upscale feel. Inspired by the interior design of the CX-60, the CX-90 adopts a clean and minimalist aesthetic, with thoughtfully curated contrasting color schemes and metallic accents adding a refined touch. Depending on the variant, the CX-90 comes with captain’s chairs in the second row or a bench seat for more passenger space. Opting for the variant with captain’s chairs will have the added benefit of cooled seats for the second row which in the Philippines is a game changer.
Overall, the CX-90’s interior delivers a delightful experience for both drivers and passengers alike. The driver-focused cockpit is ergonomically crafted to enhance the joy of driving, while passengers enjoy a luxurious and comfortable environment that elevates every journey.
While the price tag of over P3.5 million may seem steep, the CX-90 stands out with exceptional value if you pit it against other higher priced crossovers. Compared to European brands offering similar setups at significantly higher prices, the CX-90 is a clever way to access top-tier luxury without breaking the bank.
