2023 came and went just like that, and there were a ton of new cars that made a name for themselves and others that revived their reputations after a remarkable update. Ford came out swinging last year with the Territory and its most popular model to this day is still the Ranger. Two entirely Next-Generation models that sold like hotcakes.
The duo was so good that it made headlines when it was launched, padded the reservation lists of multiple Ford dealers, and ultimately ended up becoming the two most popular cars on AutoDeal for 2023. The Ranger and the Territory were neck and neck according to our metrics and site with regard to that “Get Quote” button, and it was followed closely by other brands like Toyota, but right behind it was yet another Ford, the Everest.
Intro aside, let’s get into it. Did your car make the list?
1. Ford Ranger (4.0% of all inquiries)
Undoubtedly one of the pillars of the Ford Philippines lineup, the Ranger is the best-selling model in the market today and continues to be one of the most well-equipped midsize pickups in the market today.
While the Ranger Raptor may be the most extreme, the standard Ranger is more than enough for the needs of most people in the market for a hardy and sturdy pickup platform with enough luxuries and a name brand behind all of its technology and hardware.
2. Ford Territory (3.81% of all inquiries)
The Territory followed closely behind the Ranger in the rankings, and rightfully so. The previous-generation model was already a big hit in the Philippines. Ford first put together the Territory name as a value-for-money option with all of the features that you need and more. The model was heavy on features, but not on price. Now on its Next-Genration model, the Territory is not just a great value, but it is a bona-fide head-turner on the outside and a fantastic place to be in on the inside.
It got second place this year, but only by a hair. Given that its name rose to fame in such a short time is remarkable, and it’s up there in terms of popularity now which is stellar given that it’s going up against the old guards in the industry.
3. Toyota Raize (3.63% of all inquiries)
We were actually quite shocked to see the Raize finish behind the Territory. Toyota’s done a stellar job pushing the subcompact crossover. Even as the market shifted towards feature-packed crossovers at great prices, the Raize stood strong, proving the model’s worth in the eyes of many Filipinos.
You could say that the features and the space in the Raize aren’t up to snuff compared to the rest of the market, time and time again, Toyota has proven time and time again that a good brand with good timing and a good product will sell well, and that’s what we saw in 2023 with the Raize.
4. Ford Everest (3.57% of all inquiries)
Yet another Ford breaks into the top 10. Given the popularity of the Ranger platform, it was only expected for Ford’s Next-Gen Everest to come through on at least one of the spots on the list. However, the surprise here is that it was so high up on our 2023 roundup. Given how good the platform is and the features it presents, we have to give it credit, matching up to the other Ford cars but also getting very close to the Toyota Raize.
It’s the combination of space, comfort, and features that seal the deal in addition to the looks of this car. The Everest is already a known name in the industry, so for those that are fans of the brand and the SUV, you could say that it is one of the easier recommendations in the market today.
5. Suzuki S-Presso (3.41% of all inquiries)
The S-Presso made headlines when it was first launched in the Philippines as a 2019 model year. At the four-year mark, Suzuki launched a new variant that many people were clamoring for. The S-Presso was the most affordable Suzuki back then and it still holds that title today with its manual transmission variant. However, the AGS renewed the market’s interest in the nameplate, offering people a practical hatchback with just enough space and a good level of ground clearance making it perfect for city slicking—potholes and humps included.
It also helps that it has one of the more memorable designs in its class right now. You should get this car in a bright color to stand out and to make it an even funner car to own and drive.
6. Toyota Hilux (3.16% of all inquiries)
The Hilux is the second pickup to place in our 2023 rankings. As the second most popular pickup on AutoDeal, it continues to sell well it continues to tug at the heartstrings of many pickup enthusiasts in the market. You must recognize the Hilux and a lot of brands have tried to answer back with features, but Toyota has stayed strong with its legendary nameplate.
Nissan’s midsize Navara is known for its comfort and robustness. It’s one of the most popular models in the market because it has a lot to offer in terms of utility and its ride. One of the only trucks in the market with rear coil springs, it can still haul a tonne of weight, and it continues to be a fan-favorite in the segment thanks to its refresh. Is it better than its other competitors? For those who prioritize comfort, it’s a top choice.
8. Mitsubishi Xpander (2.79% of all inquiries)
Seven-seaters took a back seat this year and it seems that more people are looking at five-seaters right now, but the Xpander stands tall and a head over the rest of the market. The update brought a lot of old and new Xpander fans into dealers looking for a new model with all the best trimmings from Mitsubishi. It placed eighth this year, but considering that the nameplate was number one speaks volumes about what the market wanted last year. Still, not bad placing eighth in 2023.
9. Toyota Wigo (2.50% of all inquiries)
The second small hatch in the top 10, the Wigo’s updated model brought a lot of new things to the table. Because of the car’s features, its new design, and its reworked interior, it shone the spotlight back on Toyota in the small hatch segment while presenting a value-packed pint-sized package.
10. Toyota Vios (2.33%of all inquiries)
Capping off the 10 most popular models in 2023, the Toyota Vios is the sole subcompact sedan in the top half of this list. It’s an enduring model in a market where subcompact sedan sales continue to see slumps. The market is shifting more and more towards crossovers thanks to the space and the added ride height, but it looks like it’ll take more than that to put down the trusty Toyota Vios. Rumors of a new model in 2024 may have hurt the Vios’ sales and interest in the model, but we should see Toyota’s subcompact sedan higher in the rankings once the new model comes out.
11th to 20th
Ranks 11 to 20 are a mix between seven-seat MPVs, SUVs, and vans. In 2023, the rest of the top 20 is comprised of MPVs, SUVs, and a van. In terms of the volume of inquiries, it appears that the market has been very receptive to pickups, crossovers, and some SUVs, while sedans, seven-seaters, and MPVs have slowed down quite a bit in the span of five years.
Based on the models that are popular right now, it appears that many Filipinos still want Toyota vehicles in their garages, but brands like Ford have stepped up and offered Next-Gen models to much acclaim and at prices that are accessible to a huge chunk of the Philippine market. Ford has made a lot of right choices lately, but the same can be said for the other manufacturers to a certain extent.
Toyota is definitely still in the green when it comes to brand loyalty and interest in its models. Again, consistency is still one of the Japanese marque’s strongest suits and it continues to be a popular brand across the country and across a wide range of segments.
Suzuki’s most popular cars are some very quirky and personality-filled models like the S-Presso and the Jimny. The Ertiga remains in the top 20 most popular, but the hybrid Ertiga only did a fair job collecting inquiries last year. This 2024, we can expect the Japanese brand to return in force with the Jimny Five-Door and it won’t be surprising to see at least that climb the ranks.
Mitsubishi is still doing a good job with its Xpander and Montero. However, with the new Triton pickup on the horizon, they’re one to watch in 2024.
2023 saw more crossovers make the list and only one sedan. Small hatchbacks are putting up a fight, and MPVs are slowing down. SUVs and pickups continue to remain strong at least based on the top 20 most inquired-for models on AutoDeal.
