The year 2022 had a lot of dramatic launches. The market was filled with a bumper crop of new and updated models as well as new nameplates. It was an excellent year for the industry, and there were tons of new models to get excited about, but here are the top 10 cars that car buyers in the Philippines latched onto in the past year.
As far as an overview is concerned, we found the results quite interesting. While our statistics reflect a big part of the industry, our data comes from the thousands of leads we’ve collected from eager customers looking for new vehicles. Guess what, the car on the top spot isn’t a Toyota, it’s actually a Ford. The Ford Ranger. Yep, that’s our most popular car for the year 2022.

While it may be shocking to most that a Toyota didn’t take top honors on our platform, it’s less of a shocker to see the Ford Ranger since it was a hotly-anticipated model. The midsize pickup truck got a monumental update last year, and it shows that there are plenty of car buyers that have a ton of interest in the model and its many variants. With that being said, it’s interesting to see where Ford Philippines will take the nameplate. Will we see more premium variants of the model and will we see yet another Raptor join the ranks? We can’t wait to find out. With a ton of success behind its first year in the market, it’s almost assured that Ford will release some more exciting variants in the near future.
Following the Ford, it’s a Japanese rival, but not from a brand you expect. The Nissan Navara was able to land a second-place finish by the end of 2022, beating out the Toyota Hilux which is sat all the way in fourth place. The Navara has been quite consistent in its popularity, and it’s Nissan’s most inquired-for model in the lineup. While we may lust after the e-Power Kicks, many car buyers still appreciate the practicality of a pickup.
Seven-seaters have dropped in popularity over the years. It’s either everyone who wants a seven-seater already has one or that there is no real need to upgrade. However, Mitsubishi ensured that the segment would remain exciting since it launched its new Xpander last year. The new model brought with it a new face, enhancements to the cabin, and more features to play with. Because of this, the Xpander landed in third place. We expect to see some stiff competition for the Xpander in 2023, but for now, it’s the most popular MPV, at least with our metrics.
The Toyota Hilux sits in fourth place, but right next to it is the Toyota Raize, the Japanese brand’s entry-level small crossover. A lot of people ended up buying the Raize because of its practicality and its prim and proper look. Because of this, it ended up being one of the favorites for Filipino car buyers with its economical engine in the base variant and its peppy performance in the top-spec variant.
Following that, the D-MAX settles in the sixth spot on this list. Isuzu secures dominance in commercial vehicles, but the brand is coming into its own for passenger vehicles. Such is the case with its D-MAX, a robust tool that’s been refined and honed into the model that we know today. There are unprecedented amounts of luxury here, and it’s one of the better-looking pickups out in the market today. Given that there are plenty of buyers who are looking for a new pickup, it’s a great showing for the Isuzu in 2022.
It’s surprising to see the Mitsubishi Montero Sport still make it into the top 10 most popular list even two years after its facelift. We didn’t see a lot of updates for the Montero Sport, but it remained a consistent performer in terms of popularity. Demand for the model remains consistent even if it is rather dated compared to the rest of the models out in the market.
Of course, who could forget the Toyota Vios? The quintessential car is everywhere to be seen, but even then it lands in 8th place for 2022, still impressive, but we expect a higher ranking by the time the new and updated model comes to the Philippines.
The Territory was consistent throughout the year and even the year before. Ford’s definitely happy with how well the Territory is doing, and it’s likely that we will continue to see updates for the model in the near to far future. For now, it remains a popular choice in the market finishing in 9th place on our list.
Last but not least is the Kia Stonic. It was a hit when it first launched, and Kia Philippines even added a Style edition to keep things interesting. We’re excited to see what else Kia has in store for 2023 aside from the continued success of the Stonic. Electric vehicles seem to be on Kia Philipines’ mind for the coming year, so we’re buckled in and waiting for that eventuality to come.
In summary, it looks like pickup trucks won’t be dropping off in popularity anytime soon. We expect the segment to remain strong and continue to be one of the most sought-after segments in the market, followed then by MPVs and crossovers. Perhaps new models will pose a challenge to the pickup truck segment, and possibly unseat 2022’s most popular models, but that remains to be seen as 2023 progresses.
