There are facelifts, and then there’s the 2024 Honda City. The update brought a lot of new standards to the table along with a new face to go with it. This is one of the occasions where the facelift became a must-buy for us if you are looking for a new subcompact sedan.
It’s rare to see an update as big as this. The Honda City has made its top-of-the-line safety features standard throughout the lineup, which is a big deal for its segment. When we use the word, uncompromised, we use it with regard to the safety features of the new City. However, it’s not only in safety where we feel that Honda is at the top of the heap in terms of features, drive, and in safety—of course.
Keeping safety in mind, let’s take a look at what changed and what stayed the same, and answer the question “What makes the new City safer with these features?”
Honda SENSING for all
The notion of feature-locking safety systems that could potentially save you a costly accident doesn’t look too good. Vehicle safety should be the right of every motorist, and Honda’s bid to end all road accidents is made tangible in the new Honda City. The 2024 model year of the sedan will see all variants, in the stable, across the range, in the warehouse, and in all dealerships come standard with Honda SENSING. This means that you won’t be forced to buy more expensive models anymore to get peace of mind. Every variant from the S to the V, and to the RS, will all come with Honda’s breakthrough safety technology.
While other brands have stepped up to the plate and fielded an advanced safety suite with its subcompact sedans, Honda is the first to standardize it. Not a single variant in the lineup doesn’t come with the SENSING suite of features like a Collision Mitigation Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System, Lead Car Departure Notification system, Auto High-Beam, Road Departure Mitigation, and Lane Departure Warning. All of these features that have been locked out of the most expensive models and variants have now trickled down, and there is no better time to invest in a Honda City than today.
Still the most powerful
Honda is proud that it was still able to keep its title after all these years on the market. In the time that Honda has had the City, no other manufacturer was able to top it. At least for now, with 119 hp from its 1.5-liter four-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine, the City looks like the most promising subcompact for highway use and for getting up to speed pretty quickly. In practice, the engine is also quite responsive paired with the CVT. Honda knows how to make CVTs quite fun to drive, and the response that we get from the City is one of the better ones out there.
Though, if you find yourself searching for gears to shift down to, the City gets a pair of paddles behind the steering wheel at the RS trim, which is fitting since the model does have a sporty look, so it was good on Honda’s part to at least give users the option to shift down a “gear.”
You may not think it, but power actually equates to safety. The ability to quickly stab the gas pedal and get out can actually be a safety feature. Sometimes, you just need to get out of a sticky situation quickly and in a hurry, and at least in Honda’s case, you’re assured since you have the most powerful sedan in its class, overtaking will be much easier, getting up to speed will be quicker, and it’s just fun to have a car that’s capable.
Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto
One big upgrade we saw in the Honda City for this generation is the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Come the facelift, those features are now wireless. Tangle-free, hassle-free, and cable-free, these features are also standards for the entire lineup, which absolutely great to see.
It’s also great to drive with. Instead of trying to find a cable all the time, or leaving a cable in the car, you’re assured that even if you don’t plug in, your phone will still be able to connect to the infotainment screen.
Now, the safety aspect here is that you won’t need to fiddle with your phone and get too distracted, since everything that you need is right there on the eight-inch infotainment display. On top of that, Honda has also updated the screen to be brighter and easier to use. You get your navigation data, turn-by-turn audio prompts, voice commands, and also seamless connectivity with your phone. So throw it in a bag, a glove box, or a cubby hole and focus on the road.
Five-star crash test
The ASEAN NCAP has had its turn with the Honda City, and equipped with the latest and greatest features from the brand, the score could be higher. However, the score already sits at five stars for crash testing in 2020. Three years later, the safety assistance technologies have trickled down into the lower variants of the sedan, so five stars up and down the lineup.
A safe brand
Who doesn’t know Honda? The Philippines has had a great relationship with the Japanese brand for quite some time now, and it’s a favorite among experienced and new owners alike. You won’t have to worry about finding a dealer because they’re basically everywhere. Service centers are all around the country, ready and willing to help you take care of your car. Parts availability is handled thanks to the brand’s years of experience dealing with repair and maintenance, plus the overall durability of Honda cars is proven by the number of older models still plying the streets of the metro and beyond.
Without a doubt, the City is a safe choice for a car, not just in terms of brand, but also in terms of its drive and all of its features. It’s one heck of a safe choice and one that now feels uncompromised regardless of what variant you buy.
