The Isuzu mu-X and D-MAX have recently made a strong impression on us during an off-road media drive organized by Isuzu Philippines. The two-day event took place at various locations, starting with a sumptuous breakfast at Casa Jose in Total NLEX, followed by a journey to New Clark City to demonstrate the vehicles' Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) capabilities. The ADAS features Isuzu's Smart DUO Camera, which assists drivers in avoiding accidents and ensuring road safety. This system incorporates a range of functions, including Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Adaptive Cruise Control with stop and go function (ACC), Pedal misapplication mitigation, Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). True enough, these features worked like a charm and were very accurate in their application and usage, as proven by our firsthand experience and testing. Granted, it was done in a controlled environment, but Isuzu Philippines still made the effort to try and replicate what real-world scenarios would be like. So props to Isuzu.
After the ADAS demonstration, we enjoyed a hearty lunch at Subic and then proceeded to Sacobia River in Porac Pampanga. It was here that the true off-road prowess of the mu-X and D-MAX was showcased, leaving a lasting impression on us. Remarkably, even the 4x2 units proved to be highly capable of tackling challenging terrains.
One of the key factors contributing to the exceptional off-road performance of these vehicles is their capable chassis. Isuzu has engineered a robust chassis that can handle the rigors of off-road driving, providing the necessary strength and durability. There were barely any squeaks or rattles during chassis stress and flex when facing tough and uneven obstacles and terrain.
The mu-X and D-MAX great wheel articulation allow them to maintain traction on uneven surfaces, further enhancing their off-road capabilities. This feature enables the wheels to maintain contact with the ground, ensuring stability and control even in challenging off-road conditions. There were times wherein we thought that there was absolutely no way these vehicles could still maintain traction with the amount of wheel travel they needed to overcome huge dips, but we were proven very wrong indeed. Mind you, this was all done with the absence of a rear differential locker. Very impressive.
To complement their rugged chassis and great wheel articulation, the mu-X and D-MAX feature heavy-duty suspension systems. These suspensions are designed to absorb impacts and provide a comfortable ride, even on rough terrain. The combination of a capable chassis, powerful engine, and heavy-duty suspension makes these vehicles well-suited for off-road adventures.
Under the hood, both the mu-X and D-MAX are equipped with a powerful 3.0-liter 4JJ3-TCX Blue Power Diesel Engine. This engine delivers an impressive output of 187 hp and 450 Nm of torque, ensuring ample power for conquering difficult terrains and overcoming obstacles. There definitely wasn’t a lack of power at any point during the off-road trail path, and the power delivery was more than enough to power through sticky situations in the lahar-covered Sacobia River trail.
Furthermore, Isuzu has equipped both the mu-X and D-MAX with advanced driver assistance systems to enhance off-road driving safety. These systems include traction control and active stability control, which help the driver maintain control and stability on slippery or uneven surfaces. These features contribute to a safer and more confident off-road driving experience. Both the mu-X and D-MAX were kept in control at all times, even in very loose terrain where momentum was necessary to help keep the vehicle going and to avoid getting stuck.
Both the Isuzu mu-X and D-MAX have proven their mettle during the off-road media drive organized by Isuzu Philippines. With their capable chassis, robust engines, great wheel articulation, heavy-duty suspension, and advanced driver assistance systems, these vehicles have impressed us with their off-road capabilities, even in stock configuration and 4x2 guise. Whether you're tackling challenging terrains or embarking on exciting adventures, the mu-X, and D-MAX are reliable and capable companions that won't disappoint.
If Isuzu were to equip these vehicles with rear differential lockers as standard to their 4x4 lineup, we reckon that this would be the perfect trail and overlanding vehicle and would be nearly unstoppable in any kind of terrain. Add its deep aftermarket support for off-road and overlanding modifications from name brands, then perhaps this just might be the trail weapon you might just be looking for. We have a newfound respect for the mu-X and D-MAX, who knew that one trailing session was all we needed.
