Here at AutoDeal, we’re pretty big fans of the Mitsubishi Xpander. Mitsubishi’s foray into the hotly contested small MPV segment may be slightly late to the party, but impresses with notable road going manners and unique styling. We reviewed the top trim GLS Sport and we gave it good marks overall, making it a solid choice for those looking for a do-anything small MPV.
In our popular comparison between small MPVs, the Xpander came out on top, edging out rivals such as the Toyota Rush and Honda BR-V. With a relatively affordable price tag and a good set of standard features, we’re here to help you get the most value out of your purchase of the Mitsubishi Xpander. Which trim level gets you the most enticing combination of price, features, and safety? Let’s find out.
What comes on all variants?
You’ll be happy to see that quite a number of features and safety kit do come with every Xpander across the board. The 1.5L gasoline engine that makes 105 hp and 141 Nm of torque is the sole engine choice among all trim levels. There is also a manual option that comes with a 5-speed, and a four-speed automatic for the rest. ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) is found in every Xpander, together with two airbags for the front passengers. Three-point seatbelts for all passengers and ISOFIX mounts and tether points are also standard fare. As a nice bonus, cruise control trickles down to the entire lineup, together with a tilting and telescopic steering wheel with audio and bluetooth controls.
Step above base model
The base model, 5-speed manual Xpander GLX MT comes in at just P999,000. If you do want to go beyond that, you’re looking at four-speed automatics for the higher trims, and some additional niceties. We’re starting to split hairs here as the GLX Plus AT adds 16-inch wheels, and a 7-inch touchscreen with navigation for P1,075,000. That’s just an additional P76,000 pesos for a better infotainment system and bigger wheels. Worth it? Maybe.
The Xpander GLS AT slots in at P1,110,000, upping the interior by getting a leather steering wheel, adopting a six speaker system. That’s just an added P35,000 over the GLX Plus AT, and an increase of P111,000 over the base variant. Not much of a big jump in order to get the best creature comforts that the Xapnder can bring, so, for us, the GLS AT is the best trim to get if you’re in the market for one. There is, however, one caveat.
Top trim goodies
The range-topping Xpander GLS Sport AT is priced at P1,175,000 and adds a number of cosmetic and safety features that are exclusive to this trim level. This model sports a front, side, and rear set of skirts, adding a little more visual flair to the already unique looking small MPV. Take note that these cosmetics, together with other accessories, are available for purchase individually for any Xpander at Mitsubishi dealerships, so you can always add these later on. Where the Xpander GLS Sport shines is in the additional safety kit that comes in the form of satiblity control, traction control, and useful hill start assist. The first two are great to have in case of emergency steering maneuvers to avoid a collision, and when dealing with slippery surfaces that reduce vehicle grip. The last feature is a convenience bonus, and it does help when going up steep inclines.
So, is it worth the additional P65,000 from the GLS AT, the added P100,000 from the GLS Plus AT, or the P176,000 from the base GLX MT? In terms of safety, yes. It’s always better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
Verdict
If you’re looking at which trim gives you the most value and features, we definitely recommend the GLS AT. For us, the GLS AT has all the goodies and comforts needed for any family. But if you must have the safest and most convenient Xpander around, then we won’t fault you for getting the GLS Sport AT. For some, P65,000 is justifiable for extra peace of mind. Either way, you’re getting a top contender in the small MPV class.
