If you're thinking about a more eco-friendly way to travel or simply want a vehicle that can save you money in terms of fuel prices, switching to a hybrid or electric vehicle (EV) could be a smart choice. Fortunately, both EVs and hybrids are becoming increasingly popular, and one brand, in particular, offers these vehicles at a competitive price.
That brand is BYD, and today, we’ll explore their wide range of EVs and hybrids to find out which models best suit different lifestyles and needs. Without further ado, let’s begin.
BYD Seagull
We start the list off with the most affordable vehicle in BYD’s lineup, the Seagull. The Seagull is a five-door battery-electric city car with cute proportions and sleek, sporty styling. It features a 30 kWh BYD Blade Battery, allowing you to travel up to 300 kilometers on a single charge, so you can keep going without frequent stops to recharge. With a 74 hp electric motor and 135 Nm of torque, the Seagull can reach speeds of up to 130 km/h. It also accelerates from zero to 50 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, making it perfect for quick maneuvers on busy city streets.
Charging speeds are faster than ever with the Seagull as a DC fast charger takes only 30 minutes to go from 30 percent to 80 percent while an AC wall outlet takes five hours to go from empty to fully charged. In addition, with its vehicle-to-load capability, you can even use the Seagull to power equipment and appliances while you’re outside.
The Seagull with its small size and 300 km range is not built for long road trips, but, the range will be enough for your daily commutes around the city. Combine that with a zippy powertrain and the Seagull makes for a great daily driver that’s practical and easy on the wallet.
BYD Dolphin
Moving up in size and price, we have the Dolphin. The Dolphin is a five-seater, five-door subcompact hatchback meaning it's still a capable city cruiser like the Seagull but with a lot more space and flexibility.
The BYD Dolphin is equipped with a single electric motor that produces 94 hp and 180 Nm of torque. Powered by BYD’s 44.9 kWh Blade Battery, it boasts a NEDC-estimated range of up to 405 km. The Dolphin can reach a top speed of 130 km/h and accelerates from zero to 50 km/h in just 3.9 seconds.
When it comes to charging, the Dolphin takes approximately 30 minutes to go from 30 percent to 80 percent with a 60 kW DC charger. Using an AC charger, a full charge from zero to 100 percent requires around eight hours.
Inside, the Dolphin features a massive 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen as well as automatic climate control. In terms of safety, front, side, and curtain airbags come standard as well as BYD’s DiPilot ADAS system providing drivers and passengers with a sense of security during drives.
All things considered, the BYD Dolphin is an excellent option for those seeking an electric daily driver that won’t be confined to city limits. While it may not offer the spaciousness of a crossover, the Dolphin provides a solid middle ground for drivers who aren’t fully ready to transition to an EV full-time but still want a capable vehicle for family trips and daily commutes.
BYD Sealion 6
Continuing with our trend of following BYD’s price list, the next vehicle is the Sealion 6. This vehicle in particular differentiates itself from the rest of BYD’s lineup as it is the only one with a series-hybrid powertrain. That’s right, this BYD vehicle has an engine inside it.
The BYD Sealion 6 DM-i features a permanent magnet synchronous motor paired with a 1.5-liter Xiaoyun gasoline engine for exceptional performance and efficiency. This combination provides a remarkable range of up to 1,000 kilometers, making it ideal for effortless long-distance travel.
Aside from its impressive range, the Sealion 6 is also fitted with cutting-edge tech. For starters, it’s got an expansive 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen display, dual-zone automatic climate control, an Infinity 10-speaker sound system, plus leather upholstery to highlight its interior. In terms of safety, it’s got BYD’s DiPilot ADAS system that includes but is not limited to, adaptive cruise control, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Assist, and Automatic Emergency Braking among others.
Thanks to its series-hybrid powertrain, the Sealion 6 is built for drivers who still want the safety net that fuel stations provide, allowing this vehicle to be a viable long-distance cruiser. Plus, as the engine is only there to provide power to the Sealion 6’s battery, fuel consumption and noise are kept to a minimum. If you’re the kind of person who’s not quite sure to make the leap to EVs yet, the Sealion 6 is a great middle-of-the-road option.
BYD Atto 3
Back to EVs again and next on the list is the Atto 3. At the heart of this compact crossover is a permanent magnet synchronous motor driving the front wheels, producing 201 hp and 310 Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between two BYD Blade Battery options: a 49.92 kWh model with a 410 km range or a 60.48 kWh model that extends the range to an impressive 480 km.
Charging the Atto 3 is a Type II charging system, rated at 7kW, which can fully recharge the battery in about 8 to 8.5 hours. It also comes with a portable 2.3kW charger for added flexibility. In addition, the Atto 3 supports rapid DC charging: the Dynamic version can handle up to 70kW, while the Premium version allows for up to 80kW.
Inside, the Atto 3 has a minimalist interior combined with quirky touches and a range of features designed for comfort and entertainment. At the center is a versatile 12.8-inch touchscreen display that can be configured in either landscape or portrait mode. This multifunctional display provides essential infotainment options like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while also controlling various in-car functions.
Other notable features include a five-inch digital instrument cluster, a choice between an eight-speaker or six-speaker audio system, automatic climate control, and a wireless phone charger for added convenience.
The Atto 3 is a great choice for drivers who want an electric vehicle that can be used to travel outside the metro. With a range exceeding 400 km regardless of variants, the Atto 3 is one of the few EVs that offer a lot of range on the market. Do note however that you still need to be cautious when taking it out for road trips. In our experience with the Atto 3, it can definitely do long journeys just as long as you plan your trips carefully and temper your accelerator control.
BYD Han
The next vehicle on the list is the BYD Han and with a price tag exceeding the P3,000,000 mark, we’re moving on to the more premium side of BYD’s catalog. The Han is the only sedan in BYD’s local lineup, embodying innovative design and state-of-the-art technology. Its exterior blends aerodynamics with sleek aesthetics, featuring a modern silhouette that stands out on the road. The Han’s long and sleek body showcases sharp lines and a distinctive front grille, exuding sophistication.
Inside, the BYD Han offers a luxurious and tech-forward cabin crafted from premium materials, creating an ambiance of comfort and elegance. The minimalist yet functional interior design emphasizes a user-friendly and intuitive experience for both drivers and passengers.
The Han is powered by a dual-electric motor setup, with one motor on each axle, delivering a combined output of 510 hp and 700 Nm of torque. This all-electric powertrain provides all-wheel drive, ensuring powerful and balanced performance across the front and rear wheels. Equipped with an 85.4 kWh Blade Battery, the Han is capable of reaching 521 km of driving range.
The Han isn’t designed to be a family vehicle; rather, it’s built to deliver a balance of comfort, engaging driving dynamics, and above all, a luxurious experience. This vehicle isn’t for everyone—it’s crafted for those who prioritize these qualities and are ready to invest significantly to enjoy them. If that sounds like you, the Han is an EV that’s sure to impress.
BYD Tang
The last vehicle on our list and the most expensive BYD vehicle at the time of writing, is the BYD Tang. The BYD Tang EV is a mid-size electric crossover with a sleek and dynamic design that combines smooth lines and bold accents. Its exterior boasts a confident, aerodynamic silhouette highlighted by a wide front grille adorned with the BYD logo, sharp LED headlights that add a touch of aggression, and a well-sculpted hood that enhances its muscular stance. To top it off, underneath the sharp looks is a luxurious interior and enough seats for seven people.
Under the hood, the Tang EV features a dual-motor setup that powers both the front and rear wheels. Together, these motors generate 241 hp and 330 Nm of torque, enabling this seven-seater SUV to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 180 km/h.
Nappa leather covers all seats and a striking 15.6-inch rotating infotainment system takes center stage on the dashboard. The infotainment speaker is complemented by a 12-speaker surround sound system, crafted by Danish high-fidelity audio expert Dynaudio. With Android Auto and Apple Carplay available, playing your favorite music is quick and easy.
The vehicle is equipped with its own DiPilot advanced driver safety systems, which feature lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, advanced emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Eight radar sensors keep the car aware of its surroundings, helping it avoid potential hazards. Additionally, smart cameras provide a full 360-degree view of the vehicle.
With a price tag of P3,321,000, the Tang EV falls on the more premium end of the market, making it less of an everyday seven-seater SUV. However, considering the exceptional experience it offers, the range of features it includes, and its electric powertrain, the Tang EV demonstrates its value with every journey.
