When Chevrolet Philippines initially launched the all-new Chevrolet Trailblazer it was received with mixed reviews. It was a big leap for the Golden Bowtie brand to shift the nameplate from an SUV platform to a 5-seater crossover one for its latest iterations. With many customers still missing its old SUV form factor, this begs the question, is the new Trailblazer a great crossover?
We take a quick look at what makes the new crossover stand out and give you 5 reasons why the new Trailblazer is still worth it even with its radical platform change.
A new and powerful 1.3-liter engine
With the design shift aside, the Chevrolet Trailblazer still delivers on being one of the most powerful vehicles in its segment. While the old model had a 2.8-liter turbo diesel under its hood, this new one rocks a 1.3-liter turbocharged gasoline engine instead. Don’t let its small displacement fool you as it packs a powerful punch. It pushes out 155 hp and 236 Nm of torque which puts it right in the middle of its competitors who are producing similar figures.
Infotainment system
In keeping up with the tech-oriented times, Chevrolet Philippines has done well to equip the new Trailblazer with just the right amount of technology. At the heart of the interior is an 8-inch infotainment system that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Aside from this the vehicle also has multiple driving aids such as automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist, and rear cross-traffic alert to help keep you safe.
With the amount of technology the new crossover carries, it puts it way above its competitors especially when it comes to certain passive safety features such as emergency braking. Over its previous SUV, it is also a big leap in safety which makes the car even more attractive in some respects.
Great handling
The shift to a crossover platform has had a few other benefits for the Trailblazer nameplate. One of these is that the vehicle delivers a much more dynamic driving experience. Paired with its turbocharged motor, the crossover can easily tackle corners at speed with its intuitive traction control system. The car lets you have the right amount of fun while still being safe. The turn-in of the vehicle is smooth and responsive, the steering feel is also great, and the brakes are confidence-inspiring albeit a bit too sensitive for our liking. Nevertheless, these are features that newer drivers will surely appreciate especially if they want a crossover with a little kick in its step.
Great CVT
We all understand that CVTs are great for fuel efficiency but not so much for those who want to feel a little more connected to the car. In the case of the Trailblazer, Chevrolet has tuned its CVT to act as a traditional automatic transmission. Unlike other CVTs that are available in the market, the one that the crossover has feels more direct, there isn’t much slippage when you want to accelerate hard and it seemingly always has a ratio available for you. This is great it makes you feel more connected to your vehicle all while being able to save you fuel when you want it.
Power tailgate
Convenience is always great to have especially when it comes to cars with hatches. In this case, the Trailblazer delivers well in this regard as it comes with a power tailgate. These features can be operated from within the vehicle, with the keyfob, or even with a kick to open function. This feature is so convenient that the Golden Bowtie brand even put a light on the kick to open functionality. That's right, a Chevrolet badge will light up near the bottom of the bumper at the back to show you where you should kick or swipe your foot to open up the back. This also puts it above its competition especially when it comes to its ease of access as not many come with this feature.
All things considered, while the Chevrolet Trailblazer is a bit pricy at P1,621,888 it does deliver well in terms of features in its new crossover segment. While it does lack a 360-degree camera and a sunroof, it does well with its other features. The driving experience is great as it offers you a sport and dynamic drive, the CVT also is smart enough to know when you want to just drive normally and save gas as well as know when you want it to lock into a ratio when you want to have a little fun. It also comes with a lot of safety features that many, especially newer drivers will come to appreciate.
