Volvo’s smallest crossover is coming way sooner than we thought. The 2019 Volvo XC40 has always been on our radar, as it will be the Scandinavian company’s first foray into the premium compact crossover segment, a market that has been enjoying immense growth in the past few years. It also happens to house Volvo’s first ever three-cylinder engine, and sits atop Volvo and Geely’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform.
The 2019 Volvo XC60 made its debut at the Volvo Studio in Milan in September of 2017, and production has already started as of November 2017, with deliveries slated for early 2018. Volvo’s CMA platform will be the starting point for all 40 Series diesel, gasoline, and electric vehicles from now on.
In a global sales report from Volvo sent out by the local distributor, Viking Cars, they dropped a line mentioning that the new XC40 will be made available later this year. The best technology featured in the more expensive 90 and 60 Series cars will find their way into the new Volvo XC40, creating a safe, attractive, and fuel efficient compact crossover.
The XC40 is our first entry in the small SUV segment, broadening the appeal of the Volvo brand and moving it in a new direction. It represents a fresh, creative and distinctive new member of the Volvo line-up.
Instantly recognizable are the set of Thor’s hammer slim LED headlights and running lights. The XC40 is the most youthful and dynamic of Volvo’s crossovers, and the inclusion of 2-tone color schemes, which have up to 17 combinations, provide a hip look. You’ll also have a wide choice of alloy wheels (trim dependent) ranging in size from 17 to 21-inches.
Volvo’s Pilot Assist system is also an option across the XC40 range, providing semi-autonomous driving assistance, handling steering, braking, and accelerating. In addition, you get City Safety, Run-off Road protection and mitigation, Cross Traffic alert with brake support, and a 360° camera that helps drivers maneuver their car into tight parking spaces.
The interior is also a new take on in-car storage, as functional space in the doors, under the seats, and allocated cubby holes for gadgets were a priority. This is in addition to the nine-inch high resolution touchscreen display, high quality trim pieces, and use of natural materials to deliver a driving experience unique to Volvo. You’ll also have a wide variety of contrasting interiors and colorways for the interior.
Engine choices are aplenty, with the T3 three-cylinder 1.5L turbocharged gasoline, D3 four-cylinder 2.0L turbodiesel, and T4 2.0L five-cylinder turbocharged gasoline all mated to either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic.
The Volvo XC40 also bagged the 2018 European Car of the Year award at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, and Car of the Year by UK publication What Car?. We’ll keep you up to date on any news and will definitely be there for the official launch, and get our hands on the new XC40 for a review shortly after.
