A few years back, Ford had a Ranger FX4 in its lineup, which was a differently-styled Ranger – just up to some extent, of course. It left the lineup, though, when Ford Philippines’ best-selling model got a refresh in 2018.
If you’re among those who’ve missed the variant in the Ford Ranger lineup, fret not. The Blue Oval ushers the start of 2020 with the return of the Ranger FX4. And it looks more badass than ever.
The 2020 Ranger FX4 is a spruced-up version of the mid-tier Ranger XLT trim, which means it’s basically an XLT but with different styling (a.k.a. goodbye chrome) and a bit more features, standing as the bridge between the XLT and Wildtrak trim.
However, the most notable difference stares right back at you upfront: the blacked-out mesh grille.
The FX4’s new face is a major deviation, not only from the XLT trim but from the rest of the Ranger lineup that carries a dual-bar grille. The lower bumper’s a bit different, too, donning the Wildtrak’s blacked-out chin. The headlights remain as halogens, although they're automatic.
On its side, the Ranger FX4 gets ubiquitous decals at the bottom of the front doors. To complement the look, the FX4 gets a set of 18-inch black alloys and black tubular roll bars by the bed. The black bumper and FX4 badge conclude the overall look at the back.
Unlike before when the deviations were limited to just blacked-out accents and decals (and roll bars), the new 2020 Ranger FX4 identifies itself in the lineup easily with its new-found face.
The design deviations aren’t limited to the outside styling, though. The FX4’s interior trimmings and seats are leather-clad, while the red stitches are endemic to this new variant, as are the embossed FX4 badge found on the front backrests.
Of note, the Ranger FX4 upends the XLT trims with an 8-inch TFT touchscreen infotainment that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. There are audio and hands-free controls on the steering wheel, along with cruise control. It doesn’t have a rear parking camera, though, so you’ll have to make do with rear sensors. Aside from those, the FX4 comes with rain-sensing wipers, power-folding mirrors, auto-dimming electrochromic rear-view mirror, and electronic power assist steering (EPAS).
Under the hood, the 2020 Ranger FX4 inherits the 2.2L Duratorq TDCi diesel engine from the XLT, which is practically the same power plant in its previous incarnation. This mill produces 158 hp and 385 Nm torque, sent to the rear axle via a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission. As for safety, the Ranger FX4 is equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX child seat anchors.
The new Ranger FX4 can be had in Absolute Black, Aluminum Metallic, Arctic White, Meteor Grey, and True Red. Check out the price list below:
