Remember when Toyota Thailand held its 60th anniversary last year? This celebration was more than just a commemoration of Toyota’s 60 years in the land of smiles, the event also served to showcase concept vehicles that Toyota has in the works.
Among the concepts that Toyota showcased, one of them was a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) version of their legendary workhorse, the Hilux. Since then, the BEV Hilux has made an appearance at the 2023 Bangkok International Motor Show back in March this year. And now, the automotive giant is geared to launch the BEV Hilux by 2026 as part of their plan to introduce 10 new EVs within the decade.

The announcement of this decision took place during the company's live stream of its results for the 2023 fiscal year. Toyota's decision to equip the Hilux with an all-electric powertrain is in line with its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and its overarching objective of attaining carbon neutrality by 2050. Although the electrified Hilux is more than a sure thing, Toyota has yet to reveal specifics about the BEV truck like the powertrain, battery capacity, range, and performance.

While we don’t have the juicy details just yet, the report does give us more to be excited about. If you’re wondering what the name IMV means, it stands for “Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle". In their report, Toyota mentions that an IMV BEV is among the 10 vehicles they plan to launch, we think that it could mean that like the Hilux BEV, the IMV-0 Concept is also on its way. This is important because the IMV-0 concept could be the basis for the next-generation Toyota Tamaraw that will make a return here in the Philippines. If we want to speculate a bit further, it could also mean an electric version of the Fortuner SUV, now wouldn’t that be nice?
This exciting development in Toyota’s future is something that we should definitely watch out for, let’s hope these concepts make it to the roads as actual vehicles.
