GWM and its Jolion crossover/SUV is more than just a new crossover with a new energy hybrid-electric motor. It’s also one of the safest cars you can buy, according to the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
The ANCAP is responsible for testing cars in its home market, and it’s also one of the bodies, similar to the ASEAN NCAP, that many consumers trust when it comes to crash testing and safety ratings. A five-star rating is one of the highest honors a car can achieve in the program (apart from a perfect score), and the Haval Jolion handily earned its rating in the battery of tests conducted by the organization. Both the HEV variant and the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) variants of the Jolion passed with flying colors based on the ANCAP tests.
In terms of destructive crash testing, the Jolion was able to pass with flying colors, also confirming the car’s safety rating even with the battery in the automobile. ANCAP was able to test the car’s high-voltage battery integrity for the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). The hybrid variant that was tested also featured GWM’s advanced safety features which include autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane support system with lane keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW), and emergency lane keeping (ELK), and an advanced speed assistance system (SAS). It’s also worth noting that the subcompact crossover as tested, and as specced in the Philippines also comes with dual front, side, and curtain airbags.
“To achieve a five-star ANCAP rating, production vehicles must perform at a high level across the four key safety categories, and are required to meet minimum score thresholds for each star rating level. For example, a vehicle cannot achieve a five-star ANCAP safety rating without providing a good level of protection to child occupants. ANCAP’s recent five-star safety rating for the Jolion HEV highlights its excellent safety qualities, and with this, every model in the HAVAL line up for the Philippines is now ANCAP five-star. “With the Haval Jolion HEV, Philippine customers get the full benefit of an innovative full hybrid crossover at an affordable price, at 5-star safety.”
Additionally, the Jolion is also packed with power thanks to a hybrid 1.5-liter turbocharged engine mated to an electric motor that produces a combined output of 186 hp and 375 Nm of torque, making it one of the more powerful cars in its class. Being a hybrid, GWM also stressed that it is also capable of returning good fuel economy while providing drivers comfort and amenities that match the refinement and safety of the platform and powertrain. Following the headlining hybrid option in the lineup, the Jolion also comes with an ICE version that punches out 141 hp and 220 Nm of torque from its 1.5-liter turbo motor.
In addition to safety, drivers, and passengers can also enjoy the stylish and fashionable interior with a 12.3-inch touchscreen in the middle, convenience features like a 360-degree camera, and Apple CarPlay plus Android Auto functionality as standard. As tested, the top-spec Haval Jolion is the HEV DHT Supreme, and that comes with the hybrid powertrain along with all the safety features tested in the ANCAP, and then some. The base and mid variants of the Jolion also share this score with the top-spec trim but also with value for money in tow.
