Ford and Volkswagen just signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in hopes of strengthening each company and better serve its customers globally. The car manufacturers are already exploring its options for future joint projects but stated that it will not involve equity arrangements.
If the alliance pushes through, the move could see Ford and Volkswagen developing a wide range of commercial vehicles in the future to meet the evolving demands of its customers. Further plans are still being discussed and will be announced as talks progress.
Markets and customer demand are changing at an incredible speed. Both companies have strong and complementary positions in different commercial vehicle segments already. To adapt to the challenging environment, it is of utmost importance to gain flexibility through alliances. This is a core element of our Volkswagen Group Strategy 2025. The potential industrial cooperation with Ford is seen as an opportunity to improve competitiveness of both companies globally.
This potential alliance with the Volkswagen Group is another example of how we can become more fit as a business, while creating a winning global product portfolio and extending our capabilities.
Since both brands are aiming to develop a wide range of commercial vehicles, it would be possible to see alternate versions of the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Caddy.
One can only wonder, of the brand’s future joint projects, which of those will ever reach the Philippines? And is there a possibility that it would be competitive in terms of pricing? Even more, which brand will the Filipino market go to? All these questions will be answered in due time. That’s if the alliance is formed.
