Geely seems to be joining the rest of the automakers who are vying to get an early piece of the pie when it comes to the upcoming EV pickup segment. Reports have stated that the automaker even plans to launch a sub-brand for it called RADAR with the tagline “a new and diversified outdoor lifestyle.” To secure the brand name, Geely filed the trademark application for it on April 20, 2022, and on December 22, 2021.
While not yet confirmed reports have suggested that Geely wants to separate its commercial vehicle business from the pickup truck group hence the need for a new brand. It was also done to make room for a high-end new energy vehicle brand that may come soon.
With development for the future EV truck already well underway we could soon see the new model be released sometime towards the end of 2022. The new pickup truck EV will reportedly be made in the automaker’s new production plant in Zichuan District in Zibo City Shandong Province. The new facility will be in a 127-acre area and will come with a 2.42 billion yuan investment.
Geely Philippines has yet to chime in on the upcoming EV, however, we could expect to see more electrified models hit the local showrooms soon. It is important to note that the local arm of Geely did showcase a hybrid version of the Coolray in its North Edsa showroom during its initial brand launch in the country which could indicate the are plans to bring it in locally in the coming months.
As the focus for Geely Philippines seems to be within the mainstream car categories of SUVs, sedans, and crossovers, a new pickup truck entering its local lineup could be a game-changer, especially after its current lineup has already done its part to shake up its respective segments. For now, it will be a waiting game to see if Geely Philippines will bring in the new EV pickup truck once it launches.
