Great Wall Motor (GWM) continues to impress in the realm of vehicle safety with the GWM Tank 500 HEV achieving a maximum five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
This accolade adds to the brand’s recent history of securing top ANCAP ratings for new models introduced in Australia and New Zealand. Following the previous success of the GWM Tank 300 and the Ora 03, this latest rating enhances GWM's reputation for maintaining a "five-star family" of vehicles.
In fact, even before the Tank 500 went under the ANCAP’s rigorous inspection, the entire GWM lineup in the Philippines had been certified by the ANCAP with a five-star rating. The Haval H6 earned its five-star rating back in 2021 followed shortly after by the Haval Jolion, and Cannon pickup truck in the same year. In 2022, the GWM Tank 300 earned the prestigious rating followed by the Ora 3 in 2023, which leads us to 2024 and the Tank 500.
So, how well did the Tank 500 do? To begin with, the Tank 500 scored 34.48 out of 40 points in Adult Occupant Protection, earning an 85 percent rating. The vehicle ensured adult passenger safety in frontal, full-width, and side impact tests, while also providing exceptional whiplash protection and chest impact protection.
Next up, in the Child Occupant Protection category, the Tank 500 also excelled achieving 46 out of 49 points, resulting in a 93 percent safety rating. With child dummies seated in child seats, the Tank 500 received high marks in both front and side-impact tests. More props to GWM, the Tank 500’s 93 percent rating is the highest ever given to any vehicle to date by the ANCAP under its 2023-2025 protocols.
In terms of Vulnerable Road User Protection, the Tank 500 scored 51.53 out of 63 points, earning an 81 percent safety rating. This indicates the SUV's capability to minimize serious injuries to pedestrians in the event of an accident.
Finally, the Tank 500 achieved 15.28 out of 18 points in Safety Assist, resulting in an 84 percent safety rating. This high score is due to the vehicle's numerous safety assist features, including seat belt reminders, driver monitoring, speed assistance systems (adaptive cruise control), AEB, FCW, and lane support systems such as lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring.
GWM launched the smaller Tank 300 in the country back in 2023, will the larger and more luxurious Tank 500 enter the country soon? GWM Philippines hasn’t provided any indication for a local launch yet but it doesn’t mean it's off the table entirely. If GWM does bring the Tank 500 here, it could mean more competitors like the GAC GS8 for the established Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol. Our fingers are crossed.
While we wait for development on the Tank 500’s possible arrival in the country, check out GWM’s lineup using the GWM car guide on AutoDeal.com. If you want to get started on purchasing a GWM vehicle, simply hit the “Get Quote” button to get quotes from professional sales agents near you.
