Unbelievably, the Nissan Urvan, or Nissan Caravan as known in Japan, a stalwart in the world of people carriers, has reached the ripe age of half a century. Yes, you read that correctly. This Nissan people mover made its debut in 1973 and has since seen six generations of evolution. To mark this remarkable milestone, Nissan has unveiled a special edition Japan-only model of the Urvan, appropriately named the 2024 Nissan Caravan 50th Anniversary Edition, and it boasts several distinctive features that set it apart from its regular counterparts.
Let's start with the exterior enhancements. This commemorative Urvan sports a unique blackout treatment on key elements like the grille, door handles, power-retractable side mirrors, and the tailgate garnish. The crowning jewel, though, is the eye-catching Cashmere Greige color, which takes center stage as the hero shade of this anniversary special. Adding to the exterior flair is a special 50th Anniversary decal on the tailgate, serving as a constant reminder that this is no ordinary people carrier.
Underneath, the 2024 Caravan 50th Anniversary Edition is built on the Grand Premium GX platform, offering benefits such as an extended wheelbase and a low floor for enhanced ease of entry and exit. Inside, the celebration continues with a unique leather-fabric interior, complete with the 50th Anniversary logo elegantly embroidered on the front headrests.
When it comes to performance, the 2024 Caravan 50th Anniversary Edition offers two powertrain options. The first is a 2.0-liter QR20DE four-cylinder gasoline engine, producing a modest 128 hp and 178 Nm of torque. Alternatively, there's a Mitsubishi-sourced 2.4-liter 4N16 turbo-diesel engine, churning out 130 hp and a robust 370 Nm of torque. Both engines are paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission that allows for power to be sent either to the rear wheels or all four wheels, depending on the driver's preference.
If you're eager to get behind the wheel of this special edition Urvan, sales in Japan are set to kick off in October 2023 and will run until March 2024. One can only hope that Nissan extends the availability of the striking Cashmere Greige color to markets beyond Japan, so enthusiasts worldwide can join in celebrating the enduring legacy of the Urvan as it marks its 50th anniversary.
