Earlier this December, it was reported that the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is planning to reactivate two U-Turn slots on EDSA, specifically the ones for North Avenue and Congressional. Now, MMDA has then confirmed that it will reopen the Quezon Academy U-Turn slot.
As per Jojo Garcia, MMDA General Manager, the Quezon City Academy has one of the highest volumes of traffic. Plus, he also mentioned that this decision was made after the Quezon City Government insisted on having its personnel from the Department of Public Order and Safety (DPOS) handle the traffic in the area. In coordination with the Quezon City LGU, it is set to be open either on Friday or at the latest Saturday.
I will assure everyone that even though we're opening this one, we are not favoring private vehicles.
Aside from the said location, MMDA also mentioned that they might also open the U-turn slot near Dario Bridge. Which should give way for other emergency vehicles to easily get around EDSA. Garcia further elaborated that the traffic is not as bad compared to last year, as vehicles on the road are said to be fewer than before amidst the pandemic. He even said that traffic on EDSA only worsens during rush hour and that’s only on selected areas of the major road.
Just a bit of a recap, the closing of U-Turn slots was done last September in order to improve the bus commuting experience here in the country. By then, the reactivation of the Quezon Academy U-Turn slot shall allow better flow of traffic on the major road, however, this could affect the improved travel time of the EDSA Carousel once it’s open for usage. We’re hoping for positive results, which therefore renders a better driving experience for private vehicles traversing on EDSA.
