In someone’s fantasy world, cars are to be treated with tender loving care so as not to hurt its feelings. Some people would even say that cars get jealous whenever you drive a different set of wheels. While these are all figments of imagination, Honda wants to turn things around by making it a reality. Yes, the Japanese automaker has a concept car that can generate its own emotions.
Dubbed as NeuV, Honda describes it as an “automated EV commuter vehicle” that is equipped with an artificial intelligence (AI) power unit called “emotion engine.”
Details regarding the concept’s emotion engine are vague as of this writing but Honda says that it creates “new possibilities for human interaction.” Moreover, the said engine features a set of AI technologies developed by Cocoro SB Corp., which allows it to “generate their own emotions.”
Honda began a joint research project with Cocoro SB Corp. last July 2016 to develop the emotion engine. This project intends to come up with mobility products to utilize conversations with the driver as well as other information gathered from various sensors and cameras fitted on the vehicle. With the gathered data, the system is said to perceive the emotions of the driver and to “engage in dialogue with the driver based on the vehicle’s own emotions.”
With all the terms and lack of details, you might not buy the idea that the NeuV concept car has its own emotions. Well, you’re not alone. The best thing to do now is to wait for its official debut at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 5.
