This year's Los Angeles Auto Show saw Mazda placing the spotlight over the all-new 2017 CX-9. Besides being a 3-row crossover, here's what else that's changed in its 2nd generation model.
The most noticeable transformation is its exterior styling. It showcases the latest rendition of the brand’s signature KODO - Soul of Motion body design language that’s marked by a more prominent wing grille and sharp headlights. The hood also was stretched to give it that bigger appearance up front. In addition, the windshield was swept further back for a sporty, aerodynamic look.
On the side, its wheelbase was stretched by 55mm. This gives its 7 occupants additional legroom and a better entry and exit experience. The back departs not too far from the outgoing model, except for the tail lights which were reshaped to tie in with the rest of the vehicle’s sleeker look.
The interior features rosewood trims on the center console. This is accented with Auburn Nappa leather trims on the seats and dash. But the biggest addition here is Mazda’s MZD Connect infotainment system. This streamlines the use of the entertainment system along with hands-free mobile phone operation via Bluetooth and USB, and other internet-based features through a 7-inch or 8-inch touch screen LCD.
The latest Mazda CX-9 showcases a new power plant in the form of a SKYACTIV-G 2.5L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine with variable exhaust port technology. This generates 250 hp and 420 Nm of torque to all 4 wheels via 6-speed SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission. The 4WD system also features Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD system which has 22 sensors that measure road conditions and other information. These are then sent to the rear wheels to adjust traction accordingly.
Finally, the latest Mazda CX-9 also carries the brand’s i-ACTIVSENSE safety system which has advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring, Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC), Lane-Keep Assist System (LAS), High-Beam Control (HBC), Smart City Brake Support (SCBS), Distance Recognition Support System (DRSS), and Smart Brake Support (SBS).
According to Mazda, the all-new CX-9 will go on sale in the US by the 2nd quarter of 2016. The real question here though is, when will it reach Philippine shores and for how much? While we wait on hints from Mazda, now is still a good time to get the current CX-9.
