Suzuki Japan reveals the all-new 4th generation Swift. The Japanese marque’s flagship compact car finally gets a much-needed update after 6 years – and it’s sleeker than its predecessor, with a new safety package in place as an option.
The all-new Suzuki Swift is built on a new platform called Heartect, which is claimed to be lightweight and highly rigid. It’s now 3,840 mm long, 1,695 mm wide, 1,500 mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,450 mm. Although it grew in size, the all-new model poses a sportier stance with its low center of gravity and aggressive exterior appeal.
Upfront, the all-new Swift sports a new hexagonal grille. Its headlamps have been restyled as well, drifting away from the large sweptback design of the outgoing model. The whole bonnet has also been refined with more curves, exhuming a sporty contour.
On profile, the 4th generation model inherited the downward roofline from its parents, although the hidden rear door handles gave the all-new Swift a coupe-like aura. The extending part of the rear windows connecting to the back plus the rear spoiler just adds to the active look.
Lastly, its rear end has also been completely revamped, pairing it with the curvy look of the fascia. Overall, the all-new Swift looks fun-to-drive but definitely won’t leave you hanging when it comes to power.
The cabin of the all-new Swift has been completely restyled as well. It’s youthful, with more curves than edges. The center air condition vents are now round, which is a complement to the climate control dials below the head unit.
On the other hand, the head unit of the Japanese 2017 Swift is equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has reverse camera and paddle shifters depending on the variant.
The Japanese-spec 2017 Swift comes with 3 engine choices, with a new hybrid option. First is the 1.2L Dual Jet engine that has an improved thermal efficiency. It’s available in both 5-speed manual and continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The other engine option is the mild hybrid variant of the same Dual Jet engine with integrated starter generator (ISG), equipped with a dedicated lithium-ion battery. ISG performs energy regeneration when slowing down and alleviate the burden from the engine through motor assist, further boosting the compact car’s fuel efficiency. Mild hybrid engine is mated to CVT.
Lastly, the sportier variants of the all-new Swift is powered by a 1.0L direct injection turbo engine, coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The equipped superchargers enables the car to achieve high output power for the best road performance, without compromising fuel economy.
Aside from the standard driver, passenger, side, and curtain airbags, the all-new Swift is also available with a Safety Package option which includes lane departure warning, high beam assist, adaptive cruise control (ACC), and dual sensor brake support (DSBS). DSBS uses laser radar and monocular camera to act as a collision mitigation system.
The all-new Suzuki Swift will be available in the showrooms in Japan starting January 4, 2017. However, its world debut is set on the 2017 Geneva Motor Show that will happen in March.
