MG is a British automotive manufacturer founded in 1924 by Cecil Kimber and was named after William Morris, who was his employer at Morris Garages. The first line of MGs were built using Morris’ Cowley chassis, until such time in 1924 when he finally built his first true MG, the 14/28 Super Sports. The introduction of the Super Sports also premiered the octagonal logo we know today.
Throughout history, the brand MG traded hands several times: British Motor Corporation (BMC) in 1952, British Leyland (BL) in 1975, British Aerospace (BAe) in 1988, BMW in 1994, and then to the MG Rover Group in 2000. Most recently, the rights to the MG brand were purchased by Nanjing Automobile from China, creating a new company MG Motor, which is headquartered in Birmingham, UK. It designs, develops, and assembles models under the MG marque.
MG officially made its debut in the Philippine market in October 2018 through a strategic partnership with The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI). TCCCI served as the exclusive distributor for MG in the local market from 2018 until 2023. Jumping to the present day, SAIC Motor Philippines has taken the reins of the MG brand in the Philippines, assuming the role of its sole official distributor in 2023.
Under SAIC Motor Philippines' guidance, the MG brand has introduced two battery-electric vehicles in the country: the MG 4 EV and the MG Marvel R crossover. Presently, MG Philippines has a diverse lineup of vehicles. In the sedan category, the MG 6, MG 5, and MG GT are on offer. Meanwhile, in the crossover SUV segment, the brand provides the MG ZS, MG ZS, and MG ZST. The most recent additions to their offerings are the MG 4 EV and MG Marvel R, marking the introduction of electric vehicles into the MG brand's Philippine portfolio.
