We all know that owning a car comes with the possibility of getting into an accident at least once during your ownership experience. While getting car insurance is one of the better ways to keep you and your car protected, there are times when you will have passengers in your vehicle. Now, we understand that there are airbags and seat belts to protect them in the event of a crash but what about your car insurance? Can it help protect them from expensive fees in the event of an accident? We answer that and much more as we delve deeper into what your insurance policy can cover for you concerning the safety of your passengers.
Personal Injury Protection plan
To quickly answer the question, if the driver of the vehicle you end up in an accident with has an insurance policy, then chances are you might be covered for any injuries or damages if they have a Personal Injury Protection (PIP) plan. Note that depending on the insurance policy that the driver has they may or may not have this as part of their policy, but in general, it should be part of the comprehensive insurance policy.
If the driver of the vehicle you are in is not at fault for the accident then you can make a claim against the other driver’s insurance policy under bodily injury liability. In some cases you can even get an insurance claim from both drivers, however, make sure that you have the details of the incident correct. Remember that legalities need to be considered if you are to go through with this.
What to do if you are the injured passenger
Being in a car accident can be a traumatic experience even if you can walk away from one without a scratch. However, if you are a passenger that does end up with an injury then this can be an even worse scenario. You will have to deal with pain, hospital bills, and even lost wages from the possibility of being unable to work and much more. That being said, here are a few things that you need to do if you want to file an insurance claim.
One of the first things you should do is get as much information about the accident as possible from both drivers from the incident. This includes getting their insurance information, contact information, and their respective sides of the accident. You should also get a copy of the accident report from the police. From there you will have enough information to file an insurance claim with the insurance provider of the driver at fault or from both drivers if necessary.
What to do if a passenger gets injured in your car
If you do end up in a crash with passengers onboard your vehicle, there are several ways to help them. Aside from the obvious of making sure they are safe and stable at the time of the incident, you will also have to make sure they are safe right after it. Make sure to check your insurance policy for anything that can help your passengers out especially if you are the one found to be at fault for the accident. Remember that the passenger can claim you as the driver who was negligent resulting in you being charged for medical bills. One thing to note, however, is that you are not responsible for filing any insurance claims for your passengers on their behalf. Just be cooperative when they want any information from you from the accident to help file their insurance claims against the offending driver.
If you regularly have passengers in your vehicle and you work for a transportation company such as Grab, then you might want to consider getting an insurance policy that helps protect your passengers. This can come in handy if you do end up in an accident which can cover your and their medical expenses as well. It can also help protect you from other unwanted expenses that the insurance company can cover for you. That being said, make sure to think about your insurance policy thoroughly before you decide to get one, think of your use cases, and consider which add-ons will benefit you the most.
