Switching to an electric vehicle (EV) is still a big ask for most buyers, thankfully however, with the recent influx of affordable options, EV ownership does not demand a big commitment as it did before. This means having an EV as a daily driver is no longer a dream of the past.
Though there are more EV options available, starting with a well-rounded vehicle is a wise choice, especially if it's your first EV ever. Don’t get too excited about zero to 100 km/h figures and promises of instant torque, picking a more docile EV is the best way to make sure the move to electric power is one you won’t regret.
When it comes to a well-rounded EV, the BYD Dolphin stands out as a top contender. This five-door hatchback features a single electric motor paired with a 44.9 kWh battery pack. If you're searching for an EV that's perfect for daily driving, the Dolphin is an excellent option to consider—and here’s why.
Practical and spacious
As we mentioned before, the Dolphin is a five-door hatchback EV. The Dolphin’s interior is capable of seating five passengers comfortably thanks to its flat floor and generously sized interior.
At the rear, the Dolphin provides a respectable amount of luggage space with 345 liters of trunk space with the tonneau cover. The second row has bench seating for three passengers made even better with the flat food providing impressive legroom and space to move about in. Overall, the Dolphin’s interior space is decent and flexible, capable of accommodating passengers and luggage with ease.
Decent power, impressive range
The Dolphin is not designed to compete with performance vehicles, let’s get that out of the way now, it’s designed to get you from point A to point B efficiently, and comfortably so don’t expect blistering performance figures. The Dolphin, with its single electric motor, has 94 hp and 180 Nm of torque on tap with a limited top speed of 130 km/h. Despite the small numbers though, it is capable of reaching zero to 50 km/h in 3.9 seconds, it won’t set your pants on fire but it is plenty zippy.
The Dolphin more than makes up for its small power figures with an impressive driving range of up to 405 km, courtesy of its 44.9 kWh capacity Blade Battery pack. In addition, the Dolphin charges from 30 percent to 80 percent in about 30 minutes with a 60 kW DC charger. Using an AC charger, it takes around eight hours to reach a full charge from zero percent to 100 percent. With its fast charging capability and impressive range, the Dolphin is quite an easy car to get used to living with, just as long as you don’t forget to plug it in the evening.
In terms of tech, the Dolphin comes out the gates swinging with its 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment display with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, configurable in either landscape or portrait mode. Additionally, drivers can monitor essential information on a five-inch LCD instrument cluster. Audio is delivered through a Dirac-HD six-speaker system, with two front speakers, two rear speakers, and two tweeters providing a rich sound experience. Additional features to note include automatic climate control, puddle lamps, heated side mirrors, and cruise control.
On the safety side of things, the BYD Dolphin offers a full suite of safety features. These include six airbags (front, side, and curtain), ISOFIX anchors, speed-sensing door locks, a tire pressure monitoring system, vehicle stability control, traction control, a panoramic camera, and both hill-start and hill-hold assist. The Dolphin also includes a keyless entry system with an advanced anti-theft mechanism for enhanced security.
What makes all of this even more remarkable is the Dolphin’s price—just P1,398,000. Given the extensive features and impressive driving range it offers for this price, the Dolphin is an outstanding EV that deserves a spot on your shortlist and your garage.
