Picture this, the original Willy’s Jeep, the Jeep CJ7, and the original Toyota LandCruiser J40. All these models evoke an aura of strength and capability, vehicles you can trust to get you deep in the jungle and out of it. Sadly, however, the constant rush of time and changing standards have consigned these vehicles into the history books, with their numbers dwindling by the day.
Enthusiasts of tough SUVs and off-roaders look to these vehicles as the golden standard of off-road machines. However, due to their spartan interior, less than refined ride, and more importantly, their age, the average person prefers a modern equivalent with the looks and capabilities of the aforementioned models, but with the comfort and conveniences of the modern automobile. For that, GWM may have the answer with the Tank 300.
If you’re looking for a car that invokes a sense of nostalgia but has the amenities of the modern age, the Tank 300 has all these qualities and more. Let’s list down a few reasons why we think so.
Retro design in the modern-day
Let’s start with the most obvious reason why the Tank 300 is a modern equivalent to the vintage machines we know and love; the looks. Due to more rigid safety standards, the rugged designs of SUVs in the past definitely won’t pass. The Tank 300’s design keeps the spirit alive with its boxy dimensions, circular headlights, robust bumpers, and flared wheel arches.
To give the Tank 300 a distinct identity, GWM incorporated some unique details. The most eye-catching feature is the horizontal DRL bar that stretches across the headlights, subtly extending into the fender. At the rear, the vertical LED taillights add a sleek touch, appearing understated when off but becoming strikingly bold at night. Overall, the Tank 300 takes inspiration from the past but revamps it to work in the modern age.
An old formula with new tricks
Unlike most modern SUVs which have gone towards utilizing unibody platforms, the Tank 300 sits on a ladder frame chassis. This allows the Tank 300 to produce some impressive metrics a 33-degree approach angle, 34-degree departure angle, 224 mm of ground clearance, and a 700 mm water wading capacity. Additionally, it comes equipped with front and rear locking differentials for enhanced traction and control. On top of that, GWM added smart features like a terrain mode selector and Tank Turn Assist which reduces its turning radius to just 5.6 meters.
As we found in our review of the Tank 300, it’s clear that GWM’s 4x4 SUV is more than capable of tackling tougher terrain way tougher than the light off-roading we did with it. Wet grass and soft dirt are no match for the Tank 300’s capabilities.
Rugged on the outside, plush on the inside
If the exterior of the Tank 300 embodies strength and toughness, the interior is modern, soft, and plush. The interior of the Tank 300 features a refined blend of black and silver trim on the steering wheel, dashboard, and doors, adding a touch of sophistication. Dominating the driver’s side are two screens: the infotainment system and the instrument cluster. Design elements like the round air vents and sturdy shifter stand out, along with the welcome absence of piano black plastics in the cabin.
Other features we appreciate include the dashboard-mounted grab handles, a configurable center cup holder, and multiple cubby spaces. The overall feel of the Tank 300 strikes a perfect balance between comfort and rugged durability. In the second row, getting in and out is made easier with side step boards and grab handles, despite the smaller-than-average doors. The seats provide a nice compromise between comfort and firmness, and while the leather isn’t the best in its class, it feels pleasantly premium to the touch.
It brings nostalgia, without the drawbacks
One of the standout features of the Tank 300 is how it combines the nostalgic charm of classic, boxy SUVs and off-roaders with modern amenities that remove the usual inconveniences of older vehicles. It delivers all the appeal of the past without the hassle—what’s not to love? Plus, with a price tag of P2,678,000, it offers the same off-roading technology as more premium SUVs, but at a significantly more affordable price.
