Aside from the mighty Ford Ranger Raptor, the Australian market also gets an FX4 Max trim that essentially carries the same engine and transmission. Not to mention, its payload capacity is significantly higher, plus it underpins some of the suspension components from the Raptor.
Earlier this February, the refreshed Ford Ranger made its Philippine debut, and the renowned midsize pickup still features a familiar line of variants: the XLS, XLT, FX4, Wildtrak, and the big boy Raptor. Yet to be in the local market is the Ranger FX4, and it seems like a good alternative for the Raptor.
In photos, the Ranger FX4 may not be as hardcore-looking as the Ranger Raptor, but it can confidently match the off-road capability of its bigger brother given that its particular trim carries several components from the Raptor. Notable exterior design elements include the ‘Ford’ script grille, its front jounce bumpers, and the BF Goodrich All-Terrain K02 265/70R17 tires, which happens to be the same set of rubbers used on the Ranger Raptor.
As mentioned, the Ford Ranger FX4 Max also carries that strong off-road DNA all thanks to its suspension components sourced from the Ranger Raptor. However, the midsize pickup comes with a new 2.0-inch monotube Fox shock absorber for both front and back. This is all topped up with a switchable 4x4 system. In terms of powertrain, the Ranger FX4 Max is powered by a familiar 2.0-liter Biturbo engine paired with a 10-speed automatic.
Approach and departure angles are noticeably improved, plus, its payload capacity gets better numbers compared with the Raptor. Specifically, its 981-kg payload is actually 215 kg more than the Ranger Raptor.
Inside, you’ll find a familiar Ranger-fashioned cabin. Aside from the sports pedals, it also comes with all-weather floor mats, and leather seats accented with Miko suede inserts. Notably, the auxiliary switches found on top of the dash also get inspiration from the Ranger Tremor.
A host of advanced safety features will also come standard on the FX4 Max. With all that said, do you think the FX4 Max is a worthy addition to the Ranger’s local lineup? Perhaps, it could serve as a budget-conscious alternative to the Raptor. Then again, for now, we’re not quite sure if this pickup will soon grace its way to the Philippines. Still crossing our fingers, though, hoping that Ford Philippines will consider this in the future given that this is one desirable Ranger.
