In the US, Ford Motor Company’s taking their SYNC 3 infotainment system to another level by giving it cool upgrades. They’ve now added Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and more AppLink apps that promise better and more flexible connectivity for their users.
According to Ford, connectivity is a big part of their Smart Mobility strategy which will give them an edge in terms of customer experience. By adding these features to the SYNC 3 system, Ford owners now have the ability to be connected, even when they’re away from their cars.
Per Don Butler, Ford executive director, Connected Vehicle and Services,
SYNC allows customers to bring the smartphone technology they're comfortable with into a vehicle and use it without hassle. With SYNC, we move at our customers' pace – making it easy for them to maintain a connected lifestyle no matter their choice of smartphone, apps or services inside and outside their vehicle.
The upgraded SYNC 3 can now pair with smartphones via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Using 4G LTE connectivity, users will now have the ability to remotely start their vehicles, unlock doors, check the fuel level, and locate where they parked.
In addition to that, the SYNC 3 will feature new AppLink apps such as Concur, Eventseeker, and Cityseeker. These use the GPS and voice command system to perform many tasks such as monitor and log travel mileage, look for the latest happenings around the metro, and locate the nearest restaurant or hotel within the city.
However, only the 2017 Ford models with SYNC 3 like the upcoming all-new Escape will get the Apple CarPlay and the Android Auto as standard. But Ford reassured that owners of 2016 models with SYNC 3 will have the option to upgrade their kit within this year.
Currently, the improved Ford SYNC 3 is only available in North America. But by 2020, this system will have already made its way globally. We just hope that Ford Philippines will eventually bring it here as well.
