The MG 5 is the brand’s entry to the ever-popular subcompact sedan segment. Impressively, it’s actually well-built, looks good, and comes with a generous amount of features that are quite surprising for its price point. For the China market, however, the MG 5 nameplate has been revived and it looks a bit different than what we have here locally. Notably, it is said to be the 2021 MG 5, and it’s actually the latest iteration of the model.
The following photos are in courtesy of CarNewsChina.com. Upon observing, the overall design has vastly matured. There’s actually a bit of MG 6 to its styling, especially the rear. Frankly though, the front is a bit polarizing yet it’s distinctive given the large grille that sports an odd pattern combined with triangular-shaped headlights.
The side, on the other hand, looks sleek and classy, which was further emphasized by the curvacious and well-planted lines. It may also seem that this MG 5 will be available with different alloy designs. No dimensions specified, but the rims may vary depending on the variant. As mentioned, the rear somewhat reminds us of the MG 6, given its taillights and the faux dual exhaust finishers.
The interior and engine specifications were not disclosed just yet. The inside should also be synonymous with the exterior’s overall elegance and sportiness, therefore, we expect that this latest iteration will have a clean and well-appointed interior that’s somewhat comparable with the rest of MG’s model lineup.
As for the engine, this one might also have a new power plant, or perhaps carry the same 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated motor on the locally sold MG 5, that’s capable of churning out 112 hp and 150 Nm of torque and it’s mated to a CVT. Then again, these are just assumptions for now. We might have to wait for the brand’s official announcement with regards to the vehicle’s power plant.
While we still get a different model sold here, the Chinese market will have a taste of this 2021 MG 5 much sooner. That said, we do hope that this new subcompact sedan will soon reach our shores, as this should be a great entry on its established segment.
