Roughly 47 percent of the 2023 Toyota GR Supras that have been purchased in the United States come equipped with manual transmissions, according to a statement provided by a Toyota representative to Road & Track magazine. This statistic translates to a total of 1216 GR Supras that have been sold since the introduction of the manual transmission option for the 2023 model year.
Originally unveiled in 2019, the GR Supra was not initially designed to include a manual transmission option. However, due to fervent requests from automotive enthusiasts, Toyota decided to invest efforts into creating a manual gearbox for the vehicle.
This manual transmission, featuring six speeds, borrows its casing design from the BMW 3 Series while incorporating the gearing mechanism from the M3. In an exclusive interview conducted by Road & Track, the vehicle's engineers disclosed these intricate details. Furthermore, the manual setup incorporates an entirely new linkage and shifter, along with Toyota's proprietary i-MT rev-matching software. To accommodate the manual shifter, adjustments have been made to the center console layout. Additionally, the final gear ratio within the differential has been modified from 3.15 to 3.46.
The surging popularity of the manual variant of the Supra is hardly unexpected. From the inception of the vehicle, enthusiasts have been vocal about their desire for a manual transmission option. Now, their wishes have been granted, and they are embracing the opportunity. The appeal of the manual Supra lies in its remarkable driving experience, delivering a harmonious blend of speed and gratification that the eight-speed automatic version simply cannot replicate.
In essence, the 2023 Toyota GR Supra has witnessed a notable shift in its market dynamics, with nearly half of its recent sales in the U.S. being attributed to models with manual transmissions. This shift is a direct outcome of Toyota's responsiveness to its dedicated fan base, resulting in an enhanced driving experience that champions the joy of manual gear shifting.
That being said, a new market in the Philippines could be unlocked for those wanting a manual Supra of their own. It is also of note that some of our neighboring countries already have the manual Supra, so this could just be a sign that Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) needs to bring this option into the country.
