The new Toyota Vios GR Sport does not only elevate the looks of the subcompact sedan, but rather it’s also sprinkled with a bit of performance DNA. From being known as a practical and reliable vehicle, the Vios might just unleash its inner sportiness this time around. Do take note that the GR Sport model is based on the current Vios.

This latest addition to the GR breed of vehicles debuted in Malaysia. Starting off with the special exterior reinforcements, the Vios GR Sport gets a revised frontend that’s complemented by a new bumper that’s treated with a lot of black details. Over the side, you’ll also notice the skirts and a set of new blacked-out 17-inch alloys wrapped in 205/45 tires. The black contrasting details were also applied on the side mirrors and door handles. Going towards the rear is a familiar story as well, however, it does get a revised bumper and a lip spoiler which should also heighten the overall sporty profile of the sedan.

Stepping inside, you’ll immediately be reminded that this is no ordinary Vios given the abundance of GR logos found on the carpets, on its push start button, on the leather-suede seats, and even on the instrument panel which presents a GR animation on the 4.2-inch multi-information display.
While the 1.5-liter gasoline engine still entails the same 106 hp and 140 Nm of torque, its mechanical upgrade has been applied to the gearbox, with the aforementioned motor now being paired with a 10-speed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). However, despite being a performance option of the Vios lineup, there’s actually no manual gearbox available.
As for safety, the Vios GR comes equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense package which includes automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning. Moreover, it also gets 7-airbags, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and a 360-degree camera system.
By the looks of it, the Vios GR Sport does seem like a promising model. That said, let’s hope that Toyota Motor Philippines will consider bringing in this one as it should serve as a proper addition to its already-extensive variant range.
