Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) continues its pursuit of carbon neutrality and will transition to 100 percent renewable energy, officially starting a day after Christmas, December 26, 2023. The automotive manufacturer has entered into a Retail Supply Contract (RSC) with TeaM (Philippines) Energy Corporation, a retail electricity supplier to meet this goal.
This agreement ensures that 90 percent of the carmaker's energy needs for manufacturing will be supplied from renewable sources, augmenting the power generated by its existing 1.46-megawatt rooftop solar power system.
Per the terms outlined in the RSC, each megawatt-hour will be supported by an International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC(E)), verifying its origin from a domestic RE plant. This means that every Toyota vehicle that rolls off TMP’s Santa Rosa plant after December 26, 2023, will be made with 100 percent green energy.
“This energy transition will neutralize TMP’s Scope 2 Emissions, particularly the indirect carbon dioxide emissions from purchased electricity for manufacturing operations. Such is a significant milestone for TMP and its mission to address climate change, making its automotive manufacturing plant in Santa Rosa City, Laguna the front-runner and early achiever of 100 percent RE ratio target for Toyota in the ASEAN region.”
Back in 2020, TMP established a goal for achieving carbon neutrality across all its manufacturing plants by 2035 as part of the Net Zero commitment, commonly recognized as the Toyota Environmental Challenge (TEC) 2050. That means, up to the year 2035, TMP has its hands full reducing carbon emissions from its remaining energy sources in manufacturing, specifically addressing petrol-type generators, ovens, and boilers used in painting processes.
In a statement, the company expressed its commitment to broadening the availability of electrified vehicles to a diverse customer base. Additionally, Toyota is dedicated to minimizing the environmental footprint of the automotive industry's value chain through targeted life cycle initiatives. The company actively involves its supply chain, logistics, and dealer networks in efforts to achieve decarbonization.
Other companies in Toyota’s umbrella are also doing their part for the TEC 2050 initiative. Local Toyota suppliers and dealers have embraced energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives, following the lead of TMP. Currently, several companies are committed to achieving a 100 percent RE ratio.
They are accomplishing this either by investing in onsite solar power facilities or by procuring renewable energy through the Philippine government's Green Energy Option Program (GEOP). Among these companies are Denso Ten Philippines Corporation, Hino Motors Philippines Corporation, Denso Philippines Corporation, and International Wiring Systems Philippines, representing suppliers. Additionally, Toyota Global City, Toyota Mabolo City, and Toyota Pasong Tamo are dealers actively involved in these sustainability efforts.
