In the midsize pickup segment, it’s usually practicality and versatility taking a front row seat to interior quality and material choices. After all, these are meant to be work trucks, providing grunt and cargo capacity when you need it, and it just so happens to have three extra seats for passengers. The 2019 SsangYong Musso flips the idea of the midsize pickup on its head, providing high quality interior materials and finishes, together with neat amenities for passengers to enjoy.
The SsangYong Musso is our favorite on-road pickup on the market right now, getting a respectable 4 out of 5 in our review scale. While the technology is impressive, the lack of a 4x4 variant with proper off-roading credentials, and basic safety features limited its score somewhat. Overall, it’s still a fine truck if you’re the type to use it as a daily driver or weekend family vehicle, as long as you stay on paved roads.
Best-in-class Interior
The cabin of the SsangYong Musso is blessed with a two tone color scheme, and the Nappa colored leather is a great touch, adding a level of luxury that this segment sorely lacks. The bits of plastic used to trim the dashboard and aircon vents is silver in color, so it blends well with the rest of the cabin, giving off a brushed aluminum vibe. The top of the dashboard is plastic, but is of the soft touch variety with nice texturing. Even the steering wheel feels nice and looks great with contrast stitching. The seats are nice and supportive, great for long drives, and the added power adjustment and cooling and heating functions add immense value to the interior.
The 8-inch infotainment system sits nicely in the center, and the button layout matches that of the climate controls, making a neat and uniform layout for the center stack buttons and control surfaces. Panel gap is narrow, and matches that of European brands, further giving us the impression that SsangYong knows their stuff when it comes to creating generously equipped and good-looking interiors. Overall, the most handsome and best feeling interior in this segment so far.
Legroom Over Cargo Capacity
The SsangYong Musso exploits its SUV roots by maximizing its cabin space, sacrificing the length of the cab by a small bit. The emphasis on passenger space and comfort is evident in the nice rear seats, which forego the usual standard bench seating in some pickups. Take note that these seats are also leather and can be heated at will. Expect to seat three adults in the second row easily, and with some wiggle room to spare.
In terms of cargo, you’re limited to the 1,300mm bed that the Musso provides. It is deep, however, you could stack more than a few pallets with ease. That could limit its usage when it comes to carrying longer items in the bed, but this is marketed as a lifestyle pickup after all. Overall, it’s a spacious and comfortable pickup for passengers, trading off bed length for legroom. That’s a win for those looking for a pickup with family and friends in mind.
