That being said, the model is one that was a particularly popular choice for taxi companies in China, good with regard to its workhorse reliability, but a hurdle if luxuries and features are top of mind.

Exterior
Exterior-wise, the Alsvin takes a safe and rather generic approach to its design. Its styling does not stand out amongst its competitors, and while it may not be visually striking, it does manage to present a presentable facade. The headlamp design, which features an aggressive look, is one of the more appealing aspects of the exterior. The large butterfly wing grille up front blends well with the overall design, and Changan wisely avoids overusing chrome, ensuring that the front fascia remains tasteful. The daytime running lights, however, look outdated, featuring individual LEDs instead of the sleeker strip appearance commonly found in modern cars.
The side profile and rear of the Alsvin also display standard sedan styling, with nothing particularly remarkable about the design. The 15-inch multi-spoke wheels are acceptable, though the 185/55 R15 tires might make the car appear smaller than it actually is. In terms of appearance, the Alsvin may not turn heads, but it doesn't necessarily disappoint either. It’s all pretty standard and straightforward.
Interior
Stepping inside, the Alsvin offers a decent interior that makes use of leather on the dash, door panels, center console, and seats. Surprisingly, the presence of soft-touch materials at this price point is a welcome surprise, contributing to a more comfortable driving experience. However, the dashboard layout is not as well-executed as one might hope. While the shapes and lines up front are passable, the haphazard arrangement of buttons and knobs detracts from the overall appeal. The blue trim and glossy black plastic contribute to a slightly tacky appearance, which takes away from the vehicle's attempt to exude a premium vibe.
On the positive side, the inclusion of a sunroof adds an airy feel to the cabin, allowing passengers to enjoy a more open and connected driving experience. However, the sound of the sunroof motor during operation is less than inspiring, as it tends to come across as a bit rough and noisy.
Interior space is respectable for a vehicle in this class, with ample legroom and decent headroom. However, seating three adults in the back might become a bit tight, as shoulder room could be a concern. In terms of cargo capacity, the Alsvin boasts a trunk with a commendable 382-liter capacity, more than enough to accommodate multiple overnight bags and additional belongings for a road trip.
Comfort
When it comes to comfort, the Alsvin offers a satisfactory ride quality, ensuring that occupants are not overly disturbed by road imperfections. However, the suspension can be heard bottoming out on occasion, especially when encountering larger potholes. The vehicle's NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) levels are on par with expectations for its class. The tires do make road noise more noticeable, and drivers will feel the impact of sizable potholes. It manages to handle EDSA’s bumps relatively well, but the noise can become pronounced, particularly at higher speeds on the expressway.
Technology
In terms of technology, the Alsvin appears to be a mixed bag. Notably, it lacks the increasingly common Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Instead, the car features a seven-inch touchscreen display accompanied by a four-speaker audio setup that is, unfortunately, subpar in quality. Some may question the inclusion of a sunroof in a subcompact sedan, given its trade-off for a more advanced audio and infotainment system. Other amenities include a tire-pressure monitoring system and cruise control, both of which prove to be practical additions. The headlight-level adjustment and idling start/stop system, however, do not make a significant impact on the overall experience, but we’re impressed that it was still shoehorned in at this price.
One highlight on the technology front is the blind-spot camera that activates when using the right-hand indicator. This feature allows drivers to negotiate tight spaces more confidently, minimizing the risk of scraping curbs or other obstacles while turning right. It is a small yet appreciated addition that enhances overall safety and convenience.
Safety
Speaking of safety, the Alsvin comes equipped with standard features that one would expect in this segment. These include ABS with EBD, stability control, hill-start assist, and dual-front airbags. However, rear passengers do not have access to airbags, which could be a drawback when compared to some competing models. The inclusion of a reversing camera with rear sensors and a blind-spot view monitor for the right side offers practical assistance during parking maneuvers.
Driving and handling
The Alsvin is available with two engine options, and the model reviewed is equipped with a 1.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine. This powertrain delivers 105 hp and 145 Nm of torque, providing adequate performance for daily commuting and city driving. While it may not be the most peppy engine in its class, it manages to offer sufficient power to navigate urban traffic with ease.
The real curiosity lies in the choice of transmission—a five-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). In an era when many automakers are adopting continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) or more advanced automatic transmissions in subcompact sedans and hatchbacks, the five-speed DCT stands out as a slightly unconventional choice. Unfortunately, this decision does not necessarily translate to improved performance. The DCT can feel somewhat sloppy at times, exhibiting jerky behavior during stop-and-go traffic. Smooth operation requires careful throttle inputs, and it might take some time for drivers to get used to its nuances.
The Alsvin's handling leaves something to be desired, particularly during cornering, where noticeable body roll becomes evident. While it is not expected to be a sporty sedan, some of its competitors manage to provide a more confidence-inspiring driving experience. Models like the Honda City and Toyota Vios have demonstrated superior handling characteristics within the same category, albeit at a much higher price tag. Looking at cars in similar price points, the MG 5 does relatively well on the driving side of things, as does the Geely Emgrand.
Fuel consumption
On the fuel efficiency front, the Alsvin delivers decent performance. In heavy city traffic, it achieves around 12.3 km/L, which is respectable for its class. In more open conditions, it can potentially reach up to 15.6 km/L. While the review did not include extensive highway driving, it is reasonable to assume that the Alsvin would achieve figures of 18 km/L or higher, making it an economical choice for long-distance travel.
That said, its competitors can also do similar or better figures, so it definitely isn’t a standout here.
Verdict
Changan has been pushing out great cars nowadays, with a solid lineup of crossovers that present great design, style, and performance. So we can’t help but feel that the Alsvin is a bit lost. It's pretty standard fare throughout. Standard styling, standard comfort, and standard performance. It doesn't represent the ethos of the brand nowadays and is in dire need of a complete overhaul.
The Changan Alsvin 1.5L Platinum DCT is a capable but unremarkable vehicle. While it may lack standout features and performance, it serves its purpose as a practical and reliable fleet vehicle. Its popularity as a taxi in China speaks to its durability and dependability. However, in a highly competitive market, the Alsvin's design, comfort, technology, and handling could benefit from a new generation model to align it with modern standards and elevate it beyond being a standard fleet option. If Changan wishes to remain competitive in this segment, improvements in these areas would be necessary to position the Alsvin as a more compelling choice for budget-conscious consumers.
However, For those who prioritize practicality and reliability over the latest and greatest gadgets and flashy designs, the Alsvin could be considered. Its unassuming appearance allows drivers to blend in with the crowd, making it suitable for individuals who prefer a more low-key approach to their daily commute. It's a no-nonsense vehicle that embraces a "get in, work" mentality, making it suitable for those who value practicality and functionality above all else. Whether it's for personal use or as part of a fleet, the Alsvin's simplicity and dependability aren’t all too bad, but to us it's perhaps a little too basic.
