Anti-Distracted Driving Act suspended

With less than a week of implementation, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and other governing agencies stop the enforcement of the controversial Republic Act 10913 or the Anti-Distracted Driving Act (ADDA). This is after numerous callouts from several sectors, including the members of the Congress and a statement from Senator JV Ejercito.

In an official statement from the DOTr Facebook page, the department said that they are to review its implementing rules and regulations (IRR), working with their Technical Working Group and other concerned stakeholders.

In the meantime, we invite the public to continue the constructive discussion on this new law so as to contribute on how we could all better promote road safety, discipline, and responsible driving,” the DOTr said.

Once the new IRR has been created, the department is to start an Information and Education Campaign (IEC) to make sure that everyone will be informed.

In the meantime, the DOTr, Land Transportation Office (LTO), Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and the PNP Highway Patrol Group (HPG) are to suspend enforcement of the law – but that doesn’t mean you can start texting and driving, though. It’s still our responsibility as motorists to ensure the safety of all road users.
