Isuzu MaxForce

A while back, Isuzu announced that a new diesel engine called the Maxforce, will power the 2025 D-Max and mu-X. When it was first teased, Isuzu didn’t provide much information, leaving out the power and torque figures.

Thankfully, we won’t have to wait any longer. Just last week, Isuzu officially unveiled the new 2.2-liter diesel engine in Thailand, with plans to roll it out across other regions soon. The new 2.2-liter engine, officially named the RZ4F-TC, boasts a displacement of 2,164 cc and a compression ratio of 15.9:1. Equipped with an advanced electronic variable geometry turbo (E-VGS), it delivers an impressive 160 hp at 3,600 rpm and generates 400 Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,600 rpm. Also new is the addition of an eight-speed automatic transmission while the six-speed manual transmission is retained for other variants in the lineup.

The 2.2-liter Ddi MaxForce engine introduces several innovations for enhanced performance. Just like the RZ4E before it with its graphite coating, the RZ4F-TC’s pistons feature an ultra-low friction coating, while the high-swirl piston head design optimizes combustion efficiency. Additional upgrades include higher-pressure fuel injectors, a new turbocharger with a larger inlet and improved turbine blades, an electronic wastegate, and an upgraded engine lubrication system.

With all these upgrades combined, Isuzu says the new 2.2-liter diesel mill sees a 10 percent improvement in fuel consumption plus Co2 emissions of only 165 grams per km.

As for the fate of the 1.9-liter RZ4E, it will remain available in a mild-hybrid (MHEV) version, but exclusively for the D-Max. The D-Max MHEV retains the same power and torque figures as the non-hybrid 1.9-liter engine, delivering 148 hp and 350 Nm. This version is paired solely with a six-speed automatic transmission and a rear-wheel-drive configuration. As for the rest, news outlets say that Isuzu will continue to sell vehicles equipped with the RZ4E engine until stocks run out.
