Hailed as one of the most recognized trucks in the Philippines, the Triton is Mitsubishi’s challenger for the midsize pickup truck segment. Previously carrying the Strada nameplate, Mitsubishi opted to use the Triton name for its sixth generation, bringing it in line with other markets using the Triton name.
The changes for the sixth generation run deeper than its new looks. The all-new Triton has been upgraded with a newly designed ladder frame, delivering superior performance and durability. Now boasting a remarkable 60 percent increase in torsional rigidity, ensuring enhanced stability and long-lasting durability.
Propelling the truck is a cutting-edge 2.4-liter 4N16 four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. The iteration of this engine on the Athlete variant flexes its muscles with an impressive 201 hp and 470 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the GL, GLX, and GLS models offer a respectable 181 hp and 430 Nm of torque. This mill is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. In addition, 4x4 variants enjoy the added advantage of Mitsubishi's Super Select 4WD-II system, featuring an active brake-controlled Limited Slip Differential (LSD) to elevate off-road performance.
Launch
The sixth generation of the Triton was previewed to the Philippine market on October 20, 2023. The official launch of the Triton is set at a future date. The launch of the Triton marked the end of the Strada nameplate in the Philippines and marked the first appearance of the Triton name on the local market.
Mitsubishi introduced seven variants of the Triton for the Philippines. The Triton lineup consists of the GL 4x2 MT, GL 4x4 MT, GLX 4x2 MT, GLX 4x4 MT, GLX 4x2 AT, GLS 4x2 AT, with the Athlete 4x4 AT sitting at the top of the range.
Platform, Chassis and Powertrain
The biggest change for Mitsubishi’s pickup truck is its newly developed ladder-frame chassis that is aimed to deliver additional performance and toughness. Compared to the previous generation, the all-new Triton benefits from a substantial 60 percent increase in torsional rigidity, promising improved overall stability and durability. By employing high-tensile steel, Mitsubishi has effectively trimmed down the weight of the latest Triton while also being more rigid.
Under the hood, a 2.4-liter 4N16 four-cylinder turbodiesel engine breathes life into the Triton. The most potent iteration of this engine flexes its muscles with an impressive 201 hp and a robust 470 Nm of torque and is found on the range-topping Triton Athlete 4x4. Moving to the GLS variants and lower, the 4N16 engine offers a commendable 181 hp and 430 Nm of torque. Transferring power from the engine to the wheels is a six-speed automatic transmission, and the 4x4 variants benefit from Mitsubishi's advanced Super Select 4WD-II system, featuring an active brake-controlled Limited Slip Differential (LSD) to keep it in control when going off-road.
Mitsubishi has introduced a comprehensive suspension enhancement, introducing a new double-wishbone front setup and employing a lighter leaf spring arrangement at the rear. Additionally, models equipped with the Super Select 4WD-II system receive an Active Yaw Control (AYC) feature, which improves cornering performance by delicately applying the brake to the inside front wheel.
