Nissan entered the Philippine market in 1969 as Nissan Motor Company, with Universal Motors Corporation (UMC) as the authorized assembler and distributor of Datsun cars and pickups. In 1983, Pilipinas Nissan, Inc. (PNI) was established by Nissan Motor Company to assemble and distribute Nissan passenger cars. Among the first passenger units to roam the Philippine roads were the Nissan Pulsar and Nissan Stanza.
Fast forward to today, NPI has been known to provide quality vehicles to the Filipino car buyers with cars like the Nissan Sylphy, Nissan X-Trail, Nissan Juke, Nissan Navara, and Nissan Urvan. In 2018, NPI challenged the tightly-contested midsize SUV market by bringing in the Nissan Terra – a seven-seater SUV based on the Navara platform.
Internationally, Nissan Motors is currently the 6th largest automobile manufacturer, which started its roots in Yokohama, Japan in 1933 but was first known as Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works in 1911. By 1934, the company was officially named as the Nissan Motor Company Ltd. On the same year, it exported 44 Datsuns for Asia, Central, and South America and finished the construction of Japan’s first mass production plant in Yokohama. It wasn’t until the 1950s when Nissan made serious efforts for globalization by meeting the unmet needs of the Australian and North American market. In the late 1950s, it entered the Australian Mobilgas Trial rally which bagged first place. Since then, Nissan has also produced well-acclaimed vehicles that people love until today including the Fairlady roadsters, Skyline coupes, Sunny (known as the Sentra locally) compact car, and the Patrol four-wheel off-roader.
Presently, Nissan has been part of the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, a partnership between Japanese brands Nissan and Mitsubishi, and French automaker Renault to breath new life into the company’s goal of providing quality cars that are both fun and practical to own. It’s on its way to becoming the largest car manufacturer in the world.
Nissan is also the world's largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, with global sales of more than 320,000 all-electric vehicles as of April 2018.[12] The top-selling vehicle of the carmaker's lineup is the Nissan LEAF, an all-electric car and the world's top-selling highway-capable plug-in electric car in history.
Nissan cars are known for their reliability and ease of maintenance. It gained notoriety in the 1990s in terms of air-conditioning, brought about by the brand’s stake at Calsonic. This gave the company a major advantage in air-conditioning technology which the company is still known for today.
