MG’s Marvel R ushers in a new era of mobility for MG Philippines as its first-ever fully electric compact crossover. Built on the Barong 5000 platform developed by both MG and tech company Huawei, it features cutting-edge V2X smart travel technology and offers an immersive 5G smart cockpit experience.
The EV crossover is equipped with two electric motors that give it 184 hp and 255 Nm of torque. Transferring power from the electric motors to the rear wheels is a two-speed automatic transmission. According to MG, the Marvel R can reach a claimed NEDC range of 402 km. When the battery juice runs out, the crossover is equipped with a 70 kWh battery and three-phase AC charging for faster recharge times.
Launch
The Marvel R made its debut in the Philippine market on October 6, 2023. MG’s electric crossover was launched alongside the MG4 EV electric hatchback, marking a new phase of MG’s product line featuring electrified vehicles for the Philippine market.
The Marvel R launched with only one variant called the Alpha. The Alpha came with a launch price of P2,588,888. The Marvel R Alpha comes with numerous driver aids and comfort features as well as autonomous emergency braking.
Platform, Chassis and Powertrain
The MG Marvel R rides on top of the Barong 5000 platform, a product of the collaboration between MG and tech giant Huawei. The electric motor of the Marvel R produces 184 hp and 255 Nm of torque. Paired with a two-speed automatic, the electric motors drive the Marvel R’s rear wheels.
Moving to the suspension, the Marvel R has MacPherson struts up front and an elaborate multi-link suspension setup at the back. The wheels on the electric crossover are 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/45 size tires. All four wheels are equipped with disc brakes, and like the smaller MG4 EV, the Marvel R has electric power steering as opposed to a traditional hydraulic system.
According to MG, the Marvel R can sprint from a dead stop to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 200 km/h. The batteries powering the crossover have a 70 kWh capacity, providing a claimed driving range of 402 km. Three-phase AC charging is equipped on the Marvel R for fast charging.

Technology Features
Inside the Marvel R, MG has given it a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver along with a larger 19.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The infotainment system has Multimedia Play, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. Comfort and convenience features continue with a dual-zone automatic climate control system with rear vents, a power liftgate, wireless charging, and power-adjustable seats for the front passengers.
In terms of driver assistance features, the Marvel R is equipped with a comprehensive set, including traction control, adaptive cruise control, hill hold control, automatic emergency braking, vehicle dynamic control, lane keep assist, reverse parking sensor, reverse camera, blind spot indicator system, cornering brake control, and a pedestrian warning system.
Exterior
Overall, the MG Marvel R has a chiseled front fascia and an exceptionally robust bumper, giving it a rugged aura that sets it apart from most other EVs. In contrast, a gracefully sloped roofline and carefully crafted character lines lend an element of sophistication to the exterior. The design of the headlights and taillights adds a futuristic touch to the overall aesthetics.
The sides are garnished with chrome accents found by the wheel wells while sculpted wheel arches and black over-fenders give the crossover added muscle. The door handles hide away into the door folding flush with the panel giving it a clean look with a flatter surface. The 19-inch wheels are an eight-spoke design with contrasting designs that appear like turbines when the Marvel R is on the move.
At the back, there are wrap-around taillights that echo the futuristic look of the front fascia. There are what appear to be vents at the sides of the bumper providing some additional dramatic flair to the EV. The black bumper trim houses the reflector strips and the rear parking sensors divided by a piece of chrome garnish in between.
Interior
Inside the Marvel R is an impressively tidy interior in contrast to the shouty exterior. Inside, passengers will encounter a subdued yet elegant ambiance adorned with ample soft-touch materials and stylish metallic accents. The cabin is equipped with a 12.3-inch all-digital instrument cluster, but the main party piece is undeniably the massive 19.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
The seats are upholstered in leather along with the door panels and steering wheel. The interior is given a splash of color with the Marvel R’s ambient lighting system with a choice of 64 colors. The rear passenger area is characterized by leather rear seats with bolstering and a flat floor. The trunk has a 375-liter capacity when the rear seats are up but can be expanded to 1,396 liters once the rear seats are folded down.
Safety
In terms of safety provisions, the MG Marvel R boasts a comprehensive package. It features an airbag system comprising front, side, and curtain-mounted airbags. Interestingly, the Marvel R has an additional set of airbags mounted in the middle of the cabin. The roster of active safety technologies includes anti-lock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, cornering brake control, electronic stability program, hill hold control, traction control, vehicle dynamic control, intelligent speed alert, lane keep assist, blind spot monitor, and autonomous emergency braking.
In addition, the Marvel R is fitted with rear parking sensors, a reverse parking camera, speed-sensing door locks, a car alarm system, ISOFIX mounts for child seats, adaptive cruise control, and an engine immobilizer as standard.
