Back in mid-May of 2021, Suzuki Philippines announced that it would be sourcing its Suzuki Jimny units from India instead of Japan. This information will come in handy as the Japanese automaker has already been spotted testing the 5-door model for the Indian market. Aside from this more information has arisen stating that Suzuki is expected to debut this new model in January at the Indian Auto Expo 2023.
To recall, the 5-door version of the Jimny has long been in speculation as to when the automaker will officially unveil it to the world. Rumors started for the vehicle as early as 2021 with not much information to point to an official reveal date. Now that a unit has been spotted being tested in India, this could mean that the new 5-door model is already ready for production and is just waiting for the right time to officially hit the global market.
As for its design, we expect it to look similar to its currently 3-door counterpart with a slightly stretched rear to accommodate those extra seats. As for its powerplant, we suspect that Suzuki might give it a slightly stronger 1.5-liter gasoline engine similar to what is found in the all-new Grand Vitara. Another option could be a 1.4-liter turbo gasoline motor that is rumored to produce around 138hp which is a substantial bump over the current 101hp that it makes now. The 5-door SUV will also likely still be available as a 4x2 or as a 4x4 model with the five-speed manual and the four-speed automatic being its transmission options.
For now, it is a waiting game to see when Suzuki will officially unveil the 5-door to the world, but as Suzuki Philippines does source its units from India, the Philippines could be one of the first few markets to get it for the ASEAN region. Like its 3-door model, this bigger version could prove to be a hit amongst buyers and enthusiasts alike.
