MG Philippines, managed by The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI) makes good on its promise to compete in the highly competitive segment of subcompact sedans, with household names like the Vios holding a substantial market share in the Philippine market.
The MG 5 is the newest subcompact trying to make a claim to fame in the Philippine market. While the rest of the competition follows closely behind the specs and features of their rivals, MG seeks to make waves by offering variants that are well equipped and pleasantly priced, to say the least.
Starting at just P658,000, in its 1.5L MT Core trim, the model is priced competitively. The company is touting it as a “big” car because it offers a huge value proposition for prospective car buyers. MG also boasts that the subcompact has dimensions that are some of the longest and widest in its class, with a length of 4,601mm and a width of 1,788mm, all on a wheelbase of 2,680mm. MG also stated that the car's trunk has a capacity of 512 L.
The vehicle is propelled by a 1.5L, 112 hp and 150 Nm capable engine that is either mated to a five-speed manual transmission or a CVT with manual mode. This puts the MG high in the pecking order of subcompacts since other cars produce figures bellow 100 hp or slightly above. The torque is also substantial, as its figure is rated to be more than some of the more powerful offerings in the market today.
The interior comes with that familiar MG flare that many Filipinos have come to love in other models like the MG 6, MG ZS, and MG RX5. The 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system can run both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Thanks to the display, drivers will have no problem viewing the 360-degree camera’s output to help negotiate tight spaces because of the birds-eye-view that they get. Top variants will get this feature, along with other premium inclusions that include a power driver’s seat and auto on/off headlamps.
Safety for this model includes a pair of airbags for the front occupants, and 4 disk brakes all around. Hill-start assist gets you going up an incline with ease, and auto brake hold takes the strain out of your foot when holding the brake while at a stop. You also get convenient features such as the keyless entry with a push start system, along with cruise control, automatic climate control, a tire pressure monitoring system, a backup camera, and a sunroof.
To sweeten the already-good deal, the MG 5 comes with a five-year or 100,000 km warranty with 1-year free periodic maintenance service (PMS). Pricing for the MG 5 are as follows:
- MG 5 1.5 STD MT - P658,888
- MG 5 1.5 STD CVT - P718,888
- MG 5 1.5 COM CVT - P848,888
- MG 5 1.5 DEL CVT - P938,888
