Mitsubishi Thailand has just made its five millionth vehicle export, a Mitsubishi Strada/Triton.
At this point, several Japanese brands have set up shops in Thailand to produce their units for export in the ASEAN region. Dubbed the Detroit of Asia, it’s one of the most essential and biggest automotive manufacturing hubs in the world, exporting thousands of units per year. One of the manufacturers that are set up in the country is Mitsubishi Motors Thailand Corporation (MMTC).
Take note that the five million unit milestone is not for total production, but for export production. MMTC celebrated its monumental feat with a little send-off ceremony at its Laem Chabang Cruise Center at the Lame Chabang port in the Chonburi province. As mentioned the Strada was the milestone export model.
“Thailand’s strategic status as an automotive hub helped drive Mitsubishi Motors Thailand to become the hub for its regional and international operations. In Thailand, we have three assembly plants, one engine factory, and one paint factory, along with the first proving ground outside Japan to strengthen research and development (R&D), and an Education Academy as a training facility for employees and soon entire value chain hires more than 400,000 positions in total, creating a number of job opportunities and contributes to building the Thai auto industry, the economy, and infrastructure.”
Following that statement, Koito added that there are more plans yet for MMTC which will include new model development, production capacity enhancement, and facilities powered by solar and renewable energy.
It took years for Mitsubishi to achieve five million units for export, with the company’s operations first starting back in 1961, and with local Thai production beginning in 1992 at the Laem Chabang Plant 1. The year 1996 marked the opening of the Laem Chabang Plant 2, and 2007 marked the Laem Chabang Plant 3, the same year that MMTC achieved one million unit exports. MMTC also boasts an annual production capacity of 400,000 vehicles, which it exports to more than 120 countries across the world.
Popular models like the Mitsubishi Montero Sport, Mirage, the Strada/Triton, and the Outlander PHEV are all made in Thailand. Asdjfasjfas
