When you consider safety as your top priority when buying a car, the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) provides one of the most comprehensive and unbiased ratings out there. Even better, the organization particularly tests vehicles that are available in the Philippines, so you are assured that the ratings apply directly to what is sold in the local showrooms.
Luckily, the ASEAN NCAP has just tested the locally-available Suzuki Swift, and it gets a commendable 4-star rating this year.
In this particular test, the ASEAN NCAP pit the GL variant into its gruesome crash tests. With dual front airbags and seatbelts equipped, the Swift GL did well in frontal impact for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) category. It provided good head and lower body protection, while chest and driver’s leg protection were deemed adequate.
On the other hand, side impact protection for the driver got mixed results; head and lower abdomen protection were good and adequate, respectively, while chest protection was seen as a weak point by the ASEAN NCAP.
The Swift GL gets 27.69 points out of the maximum 36 points for AOP.
As for Child Occupant Protection (COP), the small hatchback gets a perfect score for side impact protection and installation of child seats, but it fell a bit short in frontal impact protection, scoring 12.11 out of the maximum 16. Overall, it got a total of 39.11 points out of e maximum 49 points.
Safety Assist Technologies (SATs) weren't the Swift’s greatest gift, as it only had ABS and front seatbelt reminders available across all countries, with the Singapore-spec Swift GLs having extra rear passenger seatbelt reminder, and Electronic Stability Control only available in Thailand and Singapore. With this, the Swift got 9.10 points for SATs out of the maximum 18 points.
After normalization of the scores, the Swift GL got an overall score of 71.05, garnering a 4-star rating from ASEAN NCAP. That’s not bad at all. In comparison, the Toyota Rush and Honda CR-V got 5-star ratings from the organization, while the Mitsubishi Xpander gets 4 stars out of 5.
