The all-new Mitsubishi Triton is coming our way here in the Philippines very soon and while the midsize pickup hasn’t launched officially yet, Mitsubishi has opened the reservation list for eager customers.
Mitsubishi has claimed since the Triton first launched worldwide that the newest generation of the Triton is bigger, tougher, and stronger. Now, they have the official results to back up that claim with the official ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP) results for the 2024 Triton. Subjected to the more stringent 2021-2025 protocols, the Philippine variant of the Triton, achieved a score of 74.71 out of 100, meeting the agency's prestigious rating and bagging a five-star safety rating.
Starting with Adult Occupancy Protection, the Triton scored 32.52 out of 40. Despite being equipped with only three airbags, the model provided commendable protection to most body parts of the two front occupants. The agency noted that the cabin remained stable, with the driver's right lower leg receiving marginal protection. At the same time, the passenger experienced adequate protection to the chest and right lower leg area. In terms of Child Occupant Protection, the Triton achieved a score of 17.54 out of 20, excelling in all aspects except for the "Vehicle Based" rating. As for the Motorcyclist Safety category, the 2024 Triton achieved a score of 10.22 out of 20, with a chunk of the score taken out due to the lack of Advanced Rear Visualization on the tested vehicle.
On the other hand, in the Safety Assist Technology category, the Triton secured a score of 14.44 out of 20. It achieved a perfect rating in "Effective Braking & Avoidance," thanks to its standard anti-lock braking system and electronic stability control. While meeting the ASEAN NCAP's requirements, especially concerning the functionality and efficacy of its Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system for both stationary objects (AEB City) and moving objects (AEB Inter-Urban), the Triton lost points in this category due to the absence of standardization of the SAT systems across the entire range.
The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton is set to go on sale on January 26, 2024, next year. If you’re planning to buy one or have already pre-booked the all-new Triton, you can take solace and pride that your new truck will keep you safe and sound on the road.
