Toyota is giving us a new next-generation model for one of its most iconic hybrid nameplates, the Toyota Prius. While it is not an extremely popular model here in the Philippines, it’s a big deal for Toyota in the rest of the world.
Stay tuned for Toyota’s live stream of the new model on its official YouTube channel which will premier on November 16, 2022.
As one of the pioneering nameplates for the Japanese marque, the Prius has often been regarded as a bit of an ugly duckling for some, but a milestone of a model for others. Perhaps after a few generations of polarizing styling, Toyota may finally hit the nail on the head.
The teaser images that were sent show a lot of promise with regard to the styling of the next-generation hybrid. We’re still seeing the familiar liftback design that Toyota’s been pushing on its hybrid model for years which makes us think that the rear of the Prius will still come with a high beltline, but the front DRLs in the first teaser photo gives us the impression that it’ll get similar headlights to the Toyota GR Supra, which is a good thing.
We’re definitely going to get a new and restyled front fascia. The outgoing model had a polarizing design, but this one could take the cake. Apart from the restyling, we’re unsure if Toyota will debut a new powertrain for the model, but it’s possible that we will see a new 2.0-liter hybrid engine that will be an improvement over the 1.8-liter hybrid powertrain.
However, sources suggest that Toyota will be putting new solid-state batteries on production vehicles by 2025, and it’s not clear whether the Prius will be able to accommodate that technology should it reach a production-ready state. Toyota hasn’t made it clear what production car will be the first to receive its new technology.
All this and more will be revealed in the launch. Stay tuned for November 16, 2022.
