The Toyota Wigo is an entry-level hatchback made by Toyota Motor Philippines for urban-dwelling young professionals or those looking for their first car. With a sporty front fascia, rear spoiler, and third brake light, the Toyota Wigo exudes fun and excitement from any angle. Known as the Daihatsu Ayla and Toyota Agya in other Asian countries, the Wigo consistently claims its throne as one of the Philippines' best-selling cars, year after year.
Now in its second generation, the Wigo is now built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA-A), a platform it shares with its siblings the Daihatsu Ayla and the Perodua Axia. The Wigo hatchback comes in three variants, the J, E, and the range-topping G. For the 2024 model, Toyota has replaced the antiquated four-speed automatic with a Continuously Variable Transmission.
Despite its size, the Toyota Wigo provides an ample amount of legroom for the backseat passengers. E variants and beyond feature an eight-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity along with steering wheel controls. Airbags, ABS, and hill-start control are now standard. Exclusive to the top-end G variant is a push-start button. The Toyota Wigo is powered by the 1KR-VE engine, a 1.0-liter gasoline engine that delivers 66 hp and 89 Nm of torque. It’s available in either a five-speed manual or CVT.
Launch
The Toyota Wigo was launched by Toyota Motor Philippines in 2013 and was slated to compete with the Mitsubishi Mirage at that time. It instantly became a hit because of its affordable price tag, pint-sized appeal, and value-for-money proposition to budget-conscious Filipino car buyers. It also offers opportunities for many first-time car buyers to enter car ownership through a formidable brand name.
In 2020 the Toyota Wigo would yet again be updated by Toyota Motor Philippines this time giving it a refreshed face with the addition of a new more angular bumper,s a new set of wheels, and more features such as a dash camera, a new set of machine-cut 14-inch alloy wheels, and the addition of a reverse camera. Despite the new look the Wigo still retains the same engine and interior it had with the 2017 facelift of the small hatchback. Toyota did, however, add a new top-of-the-line variant in the form of the TRD S while retaining the G and E variants of the vehicle.
Three years later, Toyota brought the second generation of the Wigo to the Philippines on July 14, 2023. Now built on Daihatsu’s new DNGA-A platform, the all-new Wigo is a few millimeters longer and wider than the previous model, interestingly, the 2024 Wigo is 15 mm shorter. Along with the new platform, the 2024 Wigo now sports a sharper and much wider stance thanks to a new exterior design and fresh wheel designs. The 2024 Wigo is available in the following colors: Silver Metallic 4, Red Mica Metallic 2, Gray Metallic, White 2, Yellow SE, and Orange Metallic 3.
Platform, Chassis and Powertrain
The 2024 Toyota Wigo rides on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA-A) platform that underpins Daihatsu and Toyota's A-segment cars available in the region. In addition to being the new platform for compact hatchbacks and crossovers, the DNGA-A platform is also built to accommodate electric and autonomous models. The Toyota Wigo in the Philippines is powered by an inline three-cylinder 12-valve 1.0-Liter 1KR-VE DOHC gasoline engine with VVT-i, capable of producing 66 metric horses and 89 Nm of torque. These output figures are sent to the front wheels via a five-speed manual or a CVT.
Front and rear suspensions are McPherson strut with coil spring and semi-independent torsion axle beam with coil spring, respectively. Stopping power is taken care of by 13-inch ventilated discs up front and drum brakes at the rear housed inside 14-inch wheels.
As an entry-level Toyota, the tech features inside the Wigo are stripped down to just essentials, however, the Wigo does have a few toys to play around with. Starting with the infotainment system, Toyota Philippines is equipping Wigo models E variant and above with an eight-inch display audio touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The J variant Wigo settles with a 1-DIN audio system. It does, however, come with Bluetooth and Aux input for a personalized listening experience. The E and G variants retain the push-button start system from the 2020 facelift which makes starting up and shutting down the small hatchback much easier.
Exterior
The second generation of the Toyota Wigo features a fully redesigned exterior and larger dimensions. Toyota’s entry-level hatchback has retained the essence of the previous Wigo but has refined every detail of its design to make it look more grown up and exciting. Starting at the front, the 2024 Wigo sports a much more aggressive-looking face thanks to the wider dimensions brought about by its new platform.
The new hatchback sports dimensions of 3,760 mm in length, 1,665 mm in width, and 1,505 mm in height, featuring a wheelbase measuring 2,525 mm. Crunching the numbers, we find that it is 100 mm longer, 65 mm wider, maintains the same height, and rides on a wheelbase that has been extended by 70 mm compared to the first-generation Wigo.
The front bumper has a wide air intake at the lower part giving the vehicle more air and better cooling. A black bumper trim divides the lower and upper intakes giving the illusion of one wide grille, these are complemented by sleek headlights and vertical DRLs flanking the sides of the rear bumper.
A quick look from the side reveals the intriguing lack of door moldings, resulting in an optical illusion of a noticeably larger appearance the car also features a more pronounced beltline, accent line, and character line. These additions play a significant role in creating a sportier look overall. When we shift our attention to the rear, the back portion of the hatchback is less flat than the model it replaces. The new Wigo sports a much squarer looking back window, black trim by the license plate, rounded-off LED taillights, and a small spoiler up top.
Toyota Philippines now offers the Toyota Wigo with three color options to choose from: Silver Metallic 4, Red Mica Metallic 2, Gray Metallic, White 2, Yellow SE, and Orange Metallic 3
Interior
Stepping inside, the 2024 Wigo sports a familiar minimalist interior that has undergone a complete redesign. The interior features sleeker lines and a more modern appearance with a tidier layout. The round air conditioning vents, previously located on the side of the dashboard, have been substituted with square, slatted vents. Additionally, the center vents have transitioned from a square shape in the older model to a more rectangular form.
The infotainment screen has been relocated to the upper part of the dashboard. However, the digital climate control system has been preserved. Lower down, a cupholder and a compartment are there for convenient storage. While descending further and between the front seats, there is a minimalist shifter console.
As for space, the Wigo can seat four people comfortably and while adding a fifth passenger into the mix is possible, it might be a tight squeeze for the people in the back. Consistent with its status as an entry-level hatchback, the Wigo features tough plastics throughout its cabin complemented by fabric-covered seats. This compact car also offers multiple storage compartments, including convenient door pockets. Good news for those with kids or for people who just want a durable and easy-to-clean interior.
Safety
All variants of the Toyota Wigo get driver and passenger airbags, ABS, engine immobilizer, three-point seatbelts, and child-lock protection. The 2024 Wigo offers Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Vehicle Stability Control, and Hill-start Assist Control as standard across its variants. Its pre-facelift model got 4 stars on its ASEAN NCAP ratings, scoring 12.84 points in adult occupancy protection and achieving 82 percent compliance for child occupancy protection.
